Hi, I am an ex student of RGPS and my DD is now 3, as our home is at boon keng, I afraid the commute for her would be far.

Are there any mummies here who are sending or planning to send their DD to RGPS and staying in the boon keng, kallang, potong pasir area? There are a couple of pri schools I am considering, but am unsure if I will waste the 2A chance of getting her in RGPS. Marymount convent in Toa Payoh is nearer, but would be tough to get in without any PV I suppose?

Marymount convent is usually pretty easy to get in if you live within 1 or 2km. I recalled this year it has vacancies left even until very late phases.
However, RGPS is probably a better school in general?
Nevertheless, it depends on your DD's aptitude as well, i suppose...

Hi, some questions /comments:
- Boon Keng is definitely not within the 1-2 km of Marymount Convent.
- Are you prepared to accept neighbourhood schools ?
- Are you open to the idea to relocate nearer to RGPS ?
- Are there any other factors to consider if you decide to relocate ? Example: After-school care and CCA arrangements etc.
- Do you think your DD would prefer an all girls' environment and the overall school culture?
- Does she have any sibling who is of the same gender ? If not, where would you like your younger child to go to ? If she is the only child, then would this status be so in the near future ?
- Would the arrangement be acceptable for all at least 6 years (or more, adding the differences in the age gap if you have a younger child) down the road ?

RGPS is not affiliated to RGS.

the key is to know your child.
Know whether or not your daughter is those type that can thrive in a Highly competitive RGS environment, or is better off in the long run, studying in a dual-track (IP) or in a normal, ordinary \"O\" level Secondary school.


Dual-track (IP) Girls' schools include -
Cedar, SCGS, Methodist, CHIJ St Nicholas Secondary.

For the two mission schools, (Methodist and CHIJ St Nicholas) Sec : after taken O level, the girls are affliated to Anglo-Chinese Junior College and to Catholic Junior College respectively, with a privilege of 2 bonus points.

For the two secular schools (Cedar, SCGS) : after taken O level, there is No affliation, to any Junior College.



Getting into RGS (IP) programme doesn't necessarily guarantee students a 6 year thru-train. After gained admission into RGS, the IP-track can run off-track, for some girls.

RGS will evaluate the girls, at different stages.


Example

at end of Year 2 EOY (End of Year) exam :
if an RGS (IP) Sec 2 student is not performing up to standard / expectations, she will be singled out during Parents-Meet-Teacher session by her Form / Co-Form Teacher, to buck up and pull up the socks, in Year 3 and 4.

If by end of Year 4 she still cannot cope, or unable to meet the promotion critieria, to enter Year 5 in RI :
the school can ask her to exit RGS.

If this student's results all along from Sec (2 to 4) had been poor and been asked to exit RGS, at end of Year 4, and if she happen to end up in a Polytechnic : chances are she will end up in those un-popular and Not-so-good (\"dumping ground\") faculty, inside the poly.

Poly nowadays are Highly selective !
To enter into those highly popular, very good, High-in-demand faculty : the L1R5 equivalent score must be single digit : around 8 points.

Since RGS, strictly an IP school, doesn't open any on-demand GCE \"O\" level class for the \"drop-out\" students of RGS ( IP) programme, unlike (in contrast with) Nanyang Girls High that do open such a class for her students who cannot cope with NYGH (IP) -
At end of year 4, Polytechnic can easily convert the RGS (IP) student's \"GPA\" score, into an \"L1R5\" equivalent score internally, to check which possible faculty to post the student to study, based on her ability to meet the official Cut-off point, for the various Diploma courses available, in the Polytechnic.


Thus, the key is to know your own child. Observe her grades, observe her daily studying habits.

If a child from Primary (4 to 6) estimated / approximate T-score for 4 subjects is around ... 240 to 250 :-
chances are, this student is better off in the long run, to go to a normal \"O\" level school and take \"O\" level exam.


How to compute T-score roughly, since we do not have the cohort level mean, std deviation, etc ?

At EOY exam, from Upper primary (P4 to P6) years -
Total up your 4 subjects (upon 400), then multiply by either 0.7 or by 0.72 (to be on a conservative mode) :
this can give you an approximated T-score

yes, I did buy. Although you may not necessary use it, i will strongly urge you to buy. THe P2 teacher did ask the kids to bring to school once. Thus, it is better to buy and stand by. But i dont think all the teachers use it. Hope this helps.
