I like to check if we opt for HCL at P5 level, does the kid need to stay back after school hours to attend HCL, or is it incorporated into normal curriculum time?

next year 2018 P5 school timetable : very jialut !

Although 2018 P5 timetable isn't out yet, but will be similar to current 2017 P5 timetable.
P5 and P6 Higher Chinese are not taught during normal curriculum hours, but taught After-school.

Literally, our Every \"Mon, Wed, Thurs\" (if your Cca fall on Wed) OR our Every \"Mon, Thurs, Fri\" (if your Cca fall on Fri) :-
are being \"eaten up\" / \"swallowed up\". They all end around 4.30 pm, on these 3 days. Jialut ! :frustrated:


Then, what if you happen to be in our school Sports team and this Cca require u to come down to practise both Wed And Fri, then become Every \"Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri\" \"eaten up\" ! Also, next year (2018) is SYF competition for school guzheng team. If belong to guzheng school team or Chinese dance school team, means have to practise more often

The school's activities have always been very \"jialuk\" as comparedd to other primary schools. St nicks wants all the students to be holistic & all-rounder at the same time. The school activities are fully-planned for the students. Your dd's time spent on VIA/enrichment will come in handy as well, as CIP hours all recorded in the report book (if you intend to dsa when come to P6). So the school is training our dd to be very bz for other activites, at the same time, must be able to cope well in their studies. I think it will prepared them even better when they go to secondary next time.

Hi Phtthp and Fizz,

If you opt for Higher Chinese (HC) at P5, you will just need to purchase the HC textbook, no need to purchase the normal Chinese books. It’ll still be taught as one subject (Chinese) during curriculum time, like in the case of P1 to P4. However, there’ll be compulsory extra lessons on Monday after school as mentioned previously. The teachers will teach the girls based on both HC and NC formats for exams. There’ll be notes given for both HC and NC words.

SBB : I know that it means choose the Subject based combination, for next year 2018 P5.
Example
for Maths : some of us will be doing 2018 Standard Maths, while others will be doing Foundation Maths, based on our year-end P4 Maths results.

I was just been informed that the release of 2018 P5 class allocation will be out on 30 Nov 2017 (during school holidays). This info was posted on our school Calendar website, mentioned that got to login to school website. Anyone know what's the actual URL hyperlink to login and check ? Thanks.


But, heard (there's rumor going on) that P4 streaming this batch (round) going to be very ... challenging.
The general gut-feel from the ground level, amidst hearing from across different 2017 P4 classes of parents' discussion : was that the SA2 Maths paper was set easy, which resulted in many P4 students did very well. The cut-off Total (upon 400 : based on Total of 4 subjects) will depend on the entire P4 cohort performance, taken from P4 combined (40% of SA1 + 60% of SA2) results.

Also, another rumor going on that school intend to change names of 2018 P5 those few Top classes ... don't know how True is it ?

I suppose you meant the allocation of top 3 classes for P5, based on P4 results, rite?

St nick rank the students according to their overall result. Top classes still use like first 1-40 (1st class); another 40 -2nd class, another 40 -3rd class. Then others mixed class. The school will rank the students, even to the decimal pt. Student A may get 88.5% but go 2nd class. Student B who score 88.9%, rank higher than her. So if left 1 vacancy to squeeze to 1st class, will be given to Student B. When come to class banding, the decimal pt also play an impt role to squeeze into which class.

Different P4 cohort : hard to say!
Depend on this year's entire P4 cohort performance (born 2007).

St nick, being a SAP school : Mother Tongue (Higher Chinese), is common across the board. Unlike those NON-SAP schools where Mother tongue vary (can be Hindi / Tamil / Chinese / Malay). In those Non-SAP schools, because Mother Tongue can vary, hence most schools like those will stream, usually according to Total of 3 subjects, Exclude Mother Tongue. I use the word \"usually\", because there are also some Non-SAP schools that stream, based on only 2 subjects, or strictly based on only 1 subject (Eg: stream, based on single subject P4 Maths, alone). Yes, there are such other mission schools that stream at P4, like this. If you ask me why so weird, why stream only based on one single subject alone ? Sorry, can't answer you. It is up to individual primary school's Principal, how they want to stream their P4 cohort, into P5 classes.


However, over here, since St Nick Higher Chinese is common across the board, streaming at year-end P4 here, is based on Total of 4 subjects. Total upon 400 marks.
St Nick will rank P4 students, according to overall Total (based on 4 subjects).

The Top three 2018 P5 classes' allocation : still using this method of sorting -
those ranked number 1-40 (enter 1st class);
those ranked number 41 to 80 - enter 2nd class,
those ranked number 81 to 120 - enter 3rd class.

The rest (from rank number 121 onwards, until the last student, in the entire P4 cohort) : will enter P5 MA ( Mixed Ability classes). The school rank the students, even to the last decimal point.


The key, important question to ask is :
What is the last Cut-off-Total or Cut-off-Overall-Percentage, for 4 subjects, to enter 3rd Top class this year, going to be ?
This will depend on the strength of our P4 cohort !

School is extremely tight-lipped. It is like asking a million-dollar \"Top-secret\" question ! Even if the P4 Teachers know the Cut-off, they are likely to have been pre-alerted beforehand, by school authority, not to disclose to many, curious keen-to-know P4 parents popping this same question. Teachers won't leak out the Cut-off.


The Cut-off-Total (upon 400 marks), varies from batch to batch (P4 entire cohort).

In some years (batch) : even if a P4 student scored 84.5% Overall (for 4 subjects), this student somehow still can manage to squeeze into the 3rd Top class. Work backwards, what is 84.5 % ?
compute : 0.845 x 400 ==> 338 , roughly, it is around 340 Cut-off upon 400, for some previous years' batches.

However, for this current 2017 P4 batch, because heard many, many students did very well, hence very likely that the Cut-off for 3rd class, going to soar and shoot up to very high !


For the Top class #1 : usually, all the All-rounders tend to end up there, must score at least minimum 90%, overall.


For P5 Top class, names also not fixed !
Current 2017 P4 Top three classes are P4 (Charity, Purity, Justice), in sequence, one by one.
But, heard school going to shuffle the names.

P5 class allocation to be announced on 30 Nov 2017, after login to school website.

So, how to know ?
Teachers are not going disclose to many curious parents : which are the Top three P5 classes' names.

But, you can observe quietly, by noting down which P5 class do the Top 3 students in your 2017 P4 class end up in, or where do the Top 10 % of your P4 classmates end up in ? From there, you can guess, trace and figure out yourself, discreetly somehow.

Example

Since 2017 P4 Charity is the Top P4 class : if you trace where the 3 Top students from P4 Charity end up in 2018 P5, you can more or less guess which is the Top P5 class, already.


no point guessing, no choice, just have to wait until 30 Nov.
P4 report card issued next Monday : 13 Nov.
