The English version of the report is still missing the big picture, which is why I said the Chinese version is clearer.

The apology by Dr Ng is not to be trivialized. It meant that there was really no such intention to diminish the emphasis of MT except that he used the wrong choice of words. Without that, from the English version, it could suggest that there might still be a hidden agenda. So I hope this issue is now put to rest and they work on the building blocks of mastering MT.
If he (eng-educated) use of wrong choice of Chinese words, I can understand....
And it took 3 weeks for him to realize the wrong choice of words?

but anyway, it is only 虚惊一场.

Minister Ng said, “I agree with everything you said. There is no difference between what you want and what MOE wants.” During the conversation, he said that “MOE has no intention of diluting the importance of MTL” and he emphasised that “the importance of MTL will be maintained”. He also confirmed that a press conference will be held this coming Tuesday to further explain this matter.

I certainly heaved a big sigh of relief upon reading this. But it ain't over till the fat lady sings I suppose. Holding my breath till Tuesday then

you are right to hold your breath, cos if the Ministry strongly believes that reducing weightage does not necessary mean undermining the importance of MT, there is no stopping them in implementing their plan.
let's just wait and see.[/quote]Hmm jedamum,

Can I stop holding my breath now

............He also apologised for having earlier given the wrong impression that his ministry planned to reduce the weighting for mother tongues at the PSLE......

wonder why he took so long to correct a \"wrong\" impression  and need PM Lee to do it with him :siam:

dun think so. their children will benefit... it is win-win...

If they really commit the resources to aid the weaker students, then the proficiency gap will narrow, and that will truly be win win.

Oh! Wat a relief! But to keep us on edge for so many days is downright impossible! Why does it take him so long despite so many petitions, speeches, feedback forums etc for him to realise the misunderstdg he has caused?

Perhaps, it was all to gather public feedback and the backlash was too much to stomach; hence the \"realisation\" and apology that he has caused a misunderstanding; but wateva, I'm definitely cheering for the positive outcome of this whole fiasco! Chinese language is alive and well in SG! Yeah!! :celebrate:

You heard of this? 脸是自己丢的,面子是别人给的............ so please allow him to exit elegantly....ok? 😉 It is immaterial now if there was a real intention, it is more important now they squashed this intention themselves.

NUS only require students to pass MT. There is no need to get an A grade. If a student cannot even pass MT, he does not qualify for a university education.

Remember that our government wants our universities to be world class. If they take in everybody, then a degree will become worthless.
Tamarind, FYI, the local university admission requirement has changed. There is no need for pass in MT. For those who fail, during the course of study, they just need to attend a MTL course conducted by the university.
