coming back to singapore, there is no compulsion that everyone must enter a top school / sap school. enjoy your childhood and enter any school your t-score would entitle you to.
You are absolutely correct. Parents can always let their kids enjoy their childhood, if they don't push the kids to get into the top secondary schools. There are many students from neighbourhood secondary schools who do very well and enter university to study a course of their choice.

Parents are the ones who are denying the kids of a happy childhood. Not the education system.

agree. but sometimes parents feel top sec provides better enviornment of 近朱者赤, they dun want their kids to be influenced by 黑者....though they know their kids can perform equally well if put in neighbourhood sec sch...

I did not read through the whole thread in this topic.

After so many years of experiment, I think MOE should realize that bilingualism cannot be Forced, even if you are a world leading English debator, can not be effectively bi-lingual!

Now gov.sg had decided that we need to increase National population (plan has dropped from 8 mil to 6.5mil), by attracting > 4 major races, which dominated Singapore population in the last 40+ years, going forward, the demographic will change, thus if we insist on MT weightage, it may put some potential Singaporean off, to call of their migration plan.

IMHO, all these are for more GDP, not for the betterment of education systems.

So you think that all these top debaters from singapore are not possibly biligual?

PSLE is a national placement exam. like it or not, every kids go through it, unless u migrate or change the government to change the system

you are welcome to disagree and there is no obligation for me to reply u

Precisely, that is why the government is
trying to change the system, so that our
kids do not have go through a childhood
that devotes too much time to an academic
exercise. So that citizens do not have to
migrate to get out of this primitive system.

But school without SA1, still have topical tests? without test/exam, how do we know how well our kids learn and how much progress they are making? Is there any other measurement that can serve same purpose without creating competition?
even sports talents have to go through competition to be measured/ranked, right?

There is nothing stressful abt it. There is no need to prepare for GEP selection test at all. If your kid can get in great, if not, just move on - getting into GEP is no big deal anyway.

Same for IP or non-IP, both will still lead to 'A' level or poly.

.... The IP schools are now coveted by parents because they are seen as the warranty of a place in the Universities. The \"teach less, learn more\" principle is thought of by parents as the schools telling us to give our kids more tuition because teachers no longer provide the answers, which are necessary so that our kids can ace their examinations!
                  .......
Strange ... I am not one of the parents that see IP schools as warranty of a place in the Universities. In fact, before we (my girl and us) select IP, our mind were full of question marks how far can she go and so many what if ... Our final decision for IP was after a relative teacher told us, how IP schools work and their ways of teaching.

\"Teach less, learn more\" concept may be misunderstood by some parents, so far I have observed, its changing the learning attitude of the children. To dig out the creativity of the children, to make them think more and think further. If the answer to a question is YES, the kids should continue to ask themselves, \"Why Yes?\" and not just stop at the YES answer. This is the type of skill they are trying to teach our children, to tickle their thinking mind. True, teachers don't just provide you with an answer and I think they should not. It is the process of finding out the answers, where one can learn better and appreciate the answers more.

I was very fortunate, to be advised on active learning attitude, by my child's primary teacher. I am very grateful to her advice ...

I have been saying in other threads too, how I wish this type of teaching is being exposed to the children at younger age in school.
😄 Very off topic now ...

No, there is no warranty. Eg. at HCI If the child does not pass the stringent requirement at end of yr 2, he will have to take 'O' path and subsquently compete with others 'O' level in-take to gain admission to his college or go poly. Those which has no 'O' level class, then got to say \"bye bye \" loh. Furthermore, at IP school, the students need to be independent self-learners as the teachers don't teach every topics of the usual text book. They can jump to a sec 3 topic at year 1. Parents needs to work, where got energy to coach them?? or guild them do projects? In the end, might as well choose an above average govt sec school .

Yap!! Thats why my teacher relative told me, better if the child is outgoing, dare to present, independent in research, can handle project works in team work .... then the child is more suitable in IP path.

And many times, project works can be rejected by the teachers and they have to re-do.

Actually, they are independent enough to do on their own, from scratch. Parents no need to worry much .... 😄

So many things to talk about if really want to go into details for IP. 😄

                      Super off topic !

academic competition is not restricted to singapore alone

                        definitely!
