      zac's mum:
Parents fined for lying about home address to get child into popular primary school

Only fined a few thousand dollars?

I thought there was a similar case (2014?) and the Dad ended up sent to jail and the girl needed to be transferred out from the choice primary school.

Yes maximum penalty has jail time. And child will be transferred out.

CNA article not very good. I found a better write up in Today:

Couple fined S$9,000 for using fake address to get son into school in Bishan

the child is p3 this year when discovered.

what if he had been in p5 or p6 preparing for psle then discovered, would have been worse if moe transfered this child out at p5 / p6 ?

if just fined a few thousand dollars, let money solve the problem, sentence is ligher, compared to jail term.

Someone commented that the fine was worth it since the child could continue studying at the popular school. I think this would translate to more parents resorting to the same scheme.

Personally, the thought of having to lie bold-faced to a policeman...lying on the P1 registration form just for a chance to ballot...even if got the place in the school, forever gotta lie when the yearly time comes to update the school with the student’s particulars...forever gotta lie when during parties/chitchatting with fellow parents...with the specter of possible jail time over my head (who’s gonna look after my kid or explain to him while I’m in jail??!)...and of course, how to live with my conscience and how to face my own child, tell him that he gotta be a good boy etc every day when I see him in the school uniform...

That alone is enough to scare me silly. So I went the legal way. I need to face my Maker end of the day.

But to each his own. Don’t think the schools ain’t smart enough to spot such things though.

But the child will be transferred out to any available school with vacancy. That's the ultimate punishment for these parents. Money and jail is not a deterrent.

Strictly speaking, the Maker isn’t concerned with legality issues. He looks at morality issues.

Yes, point taken. “I went the legal way and I didn’t have to lie.” Or backstab, pull strings, hop to a church I didn’t fully believe in etc.
