I wish MOE will let primary sch kids start school at 8am or 8.30am so they get more rests esp for those staying farther fr sch & not hv to wake ridiculously early for sch bus. Maybe also hv the upper primary kids stay for structured programmes only till abt 3/4pm. If kids lack sleep, it defeats purpose of schooling as they’ll be too tired to focus & the brain just can’t absorb & learn.

Keeping kids in school for long hours hv it’s pros & cons. Unless MOE hv a well mapped out curriculum to occupy kids learning/play learning, it’ll be futile just keeping kids in school for the sake of aligning children (the hv tuition & those can’t afford tuition kids).

Imagine our current educators are not all aligned in teaching capabilities & some wld just pump the kids with practices after practices. Ideally, if we hv a smaller class size of ave 20-25, the teachers might be able to handle coaching the weaker students. With long-hours, teachers get fatigue teaching entire day too, unless MOE train more educators to rotate hours of teaching.

Personally, with edn system in Spore as such, I just manage best I want for my own kids - they get homecook lunch, finish hmwk quickly when lesson taught same day, hv rests & play time as well as revision time. I know DS is not type to rest when there are ppl to engage him, so even when there was slumber time during childcare fr a young age, he just cldnt close his eyes to sleep. At home, he gets the rest when tired coz he’s not concern abt ppl ard him. Too familiar & comfortable with 家人mah! Lol.

Also, he gets easily bored so I’ll engage him with more out of textbook activities. He loves to draw when younger, but got into Coding & building robot with his DIY figurines. Don’t think a set curriculum with long-hours will suit this fellow.

This July, I will be enrolling my younger child in a neighbourhood primary school which is a 5 mins walk away under phase 2A(2) instead of a gep school which is a 20 mins bus journey away. If she opt for the gep school, the bus will pick her up at around 6.15 am which means she need to wake up around 5.45 am.

For the neighbourhood school, she can wake up at 7 am as she only needs to reach school by 7.45 am.

Didn't know schools starts 7.45am. My impression is Spore schools starts at 7.30am. My eyes open liao.

Good to start a young child with sufficient rests & not hv to pull them up at an unearthly hour.

I am looking at Sengkang Green. It’s a very new school and their first PSLE batch will be this year.

Esteema, some neighborhood schools are acceding to parents’ requests for later start times. One other school that starts at 8am is Cantonment Primary.

I really pity those kids who live far away and need to cut short their sleep for the school bus.

My DS is the rare one with no problem. Sleep at 8pm, wake up at 7am is fine with him, he’s an early riser anyway and bounces out of bed ready to “attack” the day. I send him to school & reach office at 7.30am, finish my day early too. But yes, I feel sad for the kids who lack sleep and can’t absorb well in school as a result. There are some kids whose parents pack back-to-back after-school tuition 3-5pm and 5-7pm. By the time they finish their day, I’m sure they just collapse into bed. (Or the younger ones…often keep themselves awake & resist bed, just for some rare play time)

Wow! I love your boy alr - ready to \"attack\" the day sounds like an eager beaver ready to experience life! Good for him.

“Elementary School Homework Probably Isn’t Good For Kids.

A powerful combination of superstition and questionable research ensures young kids hit the books instead of just, you know, reading them.”
