Speaking from personal experience as well as seeing what my friends kids are going through- I think a child needs to have his/her internal motivation to excel and do well. Its becomes an onus on him/her to want to do well. Its no point if a parent forces the kid to go for tuition or enrichment classes for every subject when the child is not self-motivated. Its becomes very difficult and puts a strain on the relationship...on the other hand, if a child wants to do well himself and sets his own priorities and goals-this makes it much easier for a parent just to be there, take a back seat and just support the kid all the way!
My son did not have this motivation till last year. Dont know what sparked this in him last year. This year, being put in the best class in his school-he is much more driven to excel in his studies, 2 CCAs and other extra personal development interests :imcool: :rahrah: -
Agreed. The internal motivation is very important. You want your child to learn on his or her own; that's most effective. Pushing and nagging often results in resistance, which hurts the long-term goal for self-improvement.

It's got a bunch of strategies consolidated over years of observing and talking to my students and their parents.
