Nanyang Girls' High School [*IP]

Did they say 99% of the remaining IP girls at Sec 4 or 99% of all Sec 4 girls (including those in O level track)? Please correct if the information is wrong, but I heard that out of a sec 2 cohort (of say 390) there will be about 20-25 girls streamed into O level class (so out of the IP system). Then, excluding a few who may have chosen to transfer out along the way (but including a few China/asean scholars and returning Singaporeans), about 100+ of the remaining sec 4 IP girls may not meet the promotion criteria of MSG 4 and better, then after moderation, another 40+ who still cannot meet the PC will have to take re-papers. Those who do not pass the re-papers will then not be able to promote to HCI (~5-10?). So statistically speaking, depending on the base used to calculate the percentage, the % of girls not being promoted to HCI from sec 1 cohort could range from 6-10%, and the % from current sec 4 IP cohort could range from 1-2% (which is pretty close to what was presented at PTM)?
Hi,
These girls who do not meet the criteria for promotion to HCI have the option of
1) applying to poly or other JC based on their sec 4 results
2) retain in nygh for another year doing the IP
3) retain in nygh for another year doing the O level
I don't think the numbers are significant though.
Dh attended the Sec 4 PTM at beginning of this year and it was shared that 99% of the girls were admitted to HCI in the previous year.

Wow... you really know the details in depth. But, why would NYGH wants to do this number game? Is it to boost the morale of the their students? or to keep the public's confidence for NYGH with best T-score school?

Thank you for your comments.
My reply above was relating to the post by by a fellow parent on \"Would non-DSA IP girls be retained too if they did not do well for their finals in year 4\" and it should be read in that context.
I did not attend the PTM (dh did but I doubt he would remember the exact words). My views are this: It is a PTM for the Sec 4 parents, not Sec 1 parents and the subject matter being promotion to HCI for IP schools, so logically I would assume that it is 99% of the Sec 4 IP cohort.
O level class - actual figure will vary from year to year, but I think should be about 20+/- thereabout , from this sharing by school. ( https://www.nygh.edu.sg/news/2016-o-level-results)
Moderation and re-take figures - Wow, that I honestly have no idea at all prior to this. My sources of information about nygh are only from dd and the school directly (I do not join any whatsapp group) and they are limited in that sense. I have never enquired from the school about it either. Anyway, personally I am not bothered by the figures before moderation. Moderation exists for school internal exams, as well as national exams. I still find it hard to believe that close to 70% of our students in Singapore taking standard chinese in PSLE obtained distinctions for the subject, which is a very different from what I see at school levels. So, it is up to the authorities/sec school and JC involved to pitch it at whatever standard it deems fit. Afterall, they are the ones taking in the students and IP papers are usually harder in terms of standard compared to the O levels. Re-takes (it is called Foundation Assessment in nygh actually) is not restricted to Sec 4 levels, I know Sec 3 levels also have that too but not sure about the lower sec. This is similar to what we have in the uni during my time, whereby a student is given a 2nd chance to attempt the paper, fill up the gaps in knowledge that may have caused them to not do well initially and a chance to promote to the next level when they do well in the 2nd attempt. I personally do not see that as a bad thing. I don't have the numbers for re-takers though, again I have never asked the school about it. The MSG criteria you stated is not right though - It is MSG 3, not 4 for promotion to HCI . Whether it is before/after moderation, before/after FA, I believe what the school shared about 99% of its IP students being promoted to HCI is as it is.
I wish to stress that while the rates for promoting to HCI is high (whether it is 90%,94% or 99%), I do not think that studying in NYGH is a walk in the park. In fact, I shared about moderating expectation in the other thread https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=65396&start=290 as I feel that these IP students are afterall, being benchmarked against top students when you speak about the child being above/below the median .
Every child does need to put in reasonable amount of effort in their studies, be well disciplined and have the right attitude to do well. It is in no way limited to IP student for whether its IP or non-IP, have O level class or no O level class, dual or single track, pure O level class or O level with NA/NT class) , the fact is that those who don’t do well will either retain, move to another track if it is available or exit the school.
Last but not least, in my opinion, a good school is one which places emphasis on character building/having the right values and support the students well, no matter how well they fare academically and which “track” the students goes to eventually.

Hi, I’m new here…
I really require the suggestion for DSA. My daughter will apply DSA this year, however we are not certain what category does she apply…her most prefer subject is English… but no any specific certificate, only got distinction @ ICAS Writing. For school result. Top in level English and Higher Chinese this two years. She is not good at Science only 90% at school exam, but she had champion at one of competition @ Singapore Science Festival last year… As these status, better to apply for Builigual or Science domain? If she apply for science domain. will not expect good result for science test if there is.
Could you kindly advice to me? -

Based on my last year DD's DSA experience, getting good overall academic result plus the specific subject domain (i.e. above 90%) should not be a problem to get shortlisted for their selected test under academic domain. I don't think the quantity of award & the level of award is important, since the school only require for P5 & P6's school results & other awards. My DD had only 1 Bronze Award for her Chinese Creative Writing Competition, & none beyond P5. Her Gold Award for The Queens Commonwealth Essay Competition was not in time to submit during the DSA application , due to the fact that the result only announced during September. But 1 important thing to note is if you going to DSA under Bilingual, NYGH views Chinese as higher priority than English. That means although your DD is doing very well for both English & Chinese, your DD must prove to the school that her Chinese is better. -
Hi Ganjiongspider ,
Thank you so much for your reply.
May I ask a question? What kind of selected test your DD take after shortlisted under Bilingual ? -
Ikuchan:
For last year, DD need to write personal response each from English & Chinese, given topics to choose from. Though written tests are part of the selection tests, I felt that the interview is the most crucial part of the applicant's fate, that means CO, WL or Reject. Though my DD did stumble over 1 or 2 interview questions, overall she was able to think quick and respond positively. That is to say, probably your answer is not the perfect one, but you must demonstrate you are able to react & respond well to any difficult situation. No matter how prepared you are, there will be surprises that questions that they want to test and ask. If you have time browse through the past years DSA KSP shared by other parents who DSA-ed NYGH, you will know what kind of selection tests the school conducted before. Hence, be prepare for the ever-changing surprises that the school want to test the applicants.Hi Ganjiongspider ,

Is probably more of moderating the results based on past trends. Raw score of exams is not an accurate gauge as it can be easily shifted by difficulties of certain subject exams in a particular year. Based on the school's experience, a certain percentage of students will fall behind academically due to varying reasons, mostly because of emotional or family issues. -
Hi,
What is your opinion of the standard of the HCL paper (compo and comprehension) in NYGH? DD is in Sec 1.
