      Ikuchan:
      Hi, I'm new here..

I really require the suggestion for DSA. My daughter will apply DSA this year, however we are not certain what category does she apply..her most prefer subject is English.. but no any specific certificate, only got distinction @ ICAS Writing. For school result. Top in level English and Higher Chinese this two years. She is not good at Science only 90% at school exam, but she had champion at one of competition @ Singapore Science Festival last year.. As these status, better to apply for Builigual or Science domain? If she apply for science domain. will not expect good result for science test if there is.
Could you kindly advice to me?
      Hi Ikuchan,

Based on my last year DD's DSA experience, getting good overall academic result plus the specific subject domain (i.e. above 90%) should not be a problem to get shortlisted for their selected test under academic domain. I don't think the quantity of award & the level of award is important, since the school only require for P5 & P6's school results & other awards. My DD had only 1 Bronze Award for her Chinese Creative Writing Competition, & none beyond P5. Her Gold Award for The Queens Commonwealth Essay Competition was not in time to submit during the DSA application , due to the fact that the result only announced during September. But 1 important thing to note is if you going to DSA under Bilingual, NYGH views Chinese as higher priority than English. That means although your DD is doing very well for both English & Chinese, your DD must prove to the school that her Chinese is better.

        Hi Ganjiongspider ,

Thank you so much for your reply.
May I ask a question? What kind of selected test your DD take after shortlisted under Bilingual ?

For last year, DD need to write personal response each from English & Chinese, given topics to choose from. Though written tests are part of the selection tests, I felt that the interview is the most crucial part of the applicant's fate, that means CO, WL or Reject. Though my DD did stumble over 1 or 2 interview questions, overall she was able to think quick and respond positively. That is to say, probably your answer is not the perfect one, but you must demonstrate you are able to react & respond well to any difficult situation. No matter how prepared you are, there will be surprises that questions that they want to test and ask. If you have time browse through the past years DSA KSP shared by other parents who DSA-ed NYGH, you will know what kind of selection tests the school conducted before. Hence, be prepare for the ever-changing surprises that the school want to test the applicants.

Wow... you really know the details in depth. But, why would NYGH wants to do this number game? Is it to boost the morale of the their students? or to keep the public's confidence for NYGH with best T-score school?

Is probably more of moderating the results based on past trends. Raw score of exams is not an accurate gauge as it can be easily shifted by difficulties of certain subject exams in a particular year. Based on the school's experience, a certain percentage of students will fall behind academically due to varying reasons, mostly because of emotional or family issues.

                Hi,

What is your opinion of the standard of the HCL paper (compo and comprehension) in NYGH? DD is in Sec 1.

Hmm....I think Compo standard is quite reasonable, like 命题作文。 Comprehension seems to set higher, more on inference skills. The school's marking is strict too.

Hi. My daughter is Sec 2 in NYGH. We are Americans. My daughter did not take HCL in Primary school. She was in the Core Level in P5/P6 at Henry Park. NYGH does realise that there are students who did not take HCL in primary school and made an effort to help with a free extra class every Monday at 7-8am. My daughter attended most of these classes and found them very helpful.

In addition there is always extra help during normal school. HCL is hard at NYGH. We have home tuition twice a week for a total of 4 hours. During holidays, we supplement with extra tuition for vocabulary and proverb (Cheng Yu). My daughter generally gets A1, A2, B3. Pass mark for Mother Tongue is 50%. They make sure she passes every year, though we are definitely borderline as we do not speak Chinese at home. If she were in a regular Express or even IP school, taking normal MT, she would most definitely be getting an A1 now. So, grades aside, Nanyang has definitely improved my daughter’s Chinese immensely. She now speaks quite fluently and not shy about chatting at all. So don’t worry. We’re Americans and even we managed.
