You may want to seriously consider Peking Uni as it is a good experience to study overseas in a reputable university. It will also be a good networking experience with PKU students who are likely to be the elites of China in years to come.
PM me if you want to know more about studying IR at PKU. -

If it's for first degree - think it'll take a long time for those 同窗 to be talent-scouted and to climb up the ladder (note the pecking order in the CCCP) for them to be 'tangibly useful' to you in any way as a govt scholar who's bonded to our clean civil service. Xi Jinping is going to be 皇帝 for life, so there won't be dramatic musical chairs/movements for some years to come. I think the 常委 will grow old with Emperor Xi!!! LOL.You may want to seriously consider Peking Uni as it is a good experience to study overseas in a reputable university. Besides, what kind of 'kang taos' are SG civil servants expecting to get out from such 同窗 guanxi? That kind of 'you scratch my back I scratch you back' thingy is quite sticky in our country and now under Xi, very sticky in China too. Then, most Singaporean scholars tend to mug and mingle with fellow compatriots & Asians, rather than forge lifelong deep friendships with locals whilst studying in overseas unis. Bear in mind too that many of these 同窗 will disappear after graduation as they'd have gone to US or UK to further their studies. They may not return to China in the short term for you to rub shoulders with or to gain any connections useful for your business in China.
If it's for post-degree - yes, most students are working adults who have already attained some decent status or rank for their employers to sponsor them for the short-term degree course. But because post-degree are usually short-term - few months to 1 year, and overseas graduates typically do not stay back in China to work, there's really little you can gain from getting acquainted with the so called 'elites' from both the corporate/public sectors in your class. You need to stay in China for a few years to build guanxi so that your PKU or THU certificate does not become a piece of waste paper. You'll lose touch, lose edge and connections within 3 years if you don't consciously keep up with the political devts/network actively (including travel a few times to China per year) as China is developing at a rapid speed.
The greatest irony is many current or former civil/public servants I know (incl a relative of mine) who'd gone for such short-term courses at THU/PKU since the late 90s - 00s, do not service the China market at all today. I don't think they'd even travelled to China for leisure in the last 3 years. What a waste of taxpayers' money.
The numbers of pp getting the China Scholarship are dwindling. Used to be about 10 ten years ago during its peak. Last year only 2.
I'd suggest only those who truly love the Chinese culture, had lived/studied there in their younger days, had/have expat parents who do biz in China or are currently working there in MNCs to apply for China unis. Having said that though, another irony I encountered was most SG expats who'd spent 10-20 years in China preferred to send their DC to US, UK or Oz for their first degrees, after they had finished their pre-tertiary education in e.g. Yew Chung Int'l! Strange, right? -

西方的月亮比较圆?
I remember that you mentioned in another separate thread that one would be deemed “doomed” for life teaching Higher Chinese after returning from PKU. That’s extremely demeaning to those Chinese teachers.
For those who studied in USA, was any of the networking with the potential elites useful? Was any of the PSC scholars classmates of Bill Clinton or Obama? If no, perhaps PSC should no longer send any of its scholars overseas.
Studying in China, and for that matter, any of the non Anglo-Saxon countries, has the key advantage of learning to look at issues from other perspectives other than the Anglophone perspective we are so used to. This is especially important as we are now in a world no longer dominated by one hegemon.
Singapore has lost it’s edge and our branding is no longer “la gu” in China? So when is Singapore ever “la gu” in USA? -

I think you briefly answered your own question in your post. One of the key considerations when choosing a university is the kind of jobs you are looking for after graduation and the kind of internship opportunities your university has to offer. University is a spring board for your leap into the job market thereafter. If you are planning to work and live in China, the obvious choice is to study in PKU. I commonly deal with College admissions to US/UK/SG universities so I am not so sure about the competitiveness of PKU. But i believe it is comparable or even more competitive than local unis so that should be a consideration as well.Hi all, I am a JC graduate who recently got my A-level results. My UAP is pretty decent I guess, 87.5. I am considering Peking University or NUS/NTU. I am at a crossroad right now, not knowing whether to stay in sg or go overseas. The pros of gg to peking will be fully covered tuition+accommodation fees+extra allowance, as well as the exposure living in one of the fastest growing countries in the world. I was thinking maybe pku will give me an edge in employment here, since china's market is expanding very quickly and there might be more companies wanting to have business dealings with china (?). However, I do recognise that local unis do provide a world-class education, and finding a job after graduating will be easier. what do i do?
p.s im planning to study IR in china, and business administration locally
Next is your command of the Chinese Language. A pre-requisite to studying at PKU is a strong foundation in Mandarin. Problems cause by language barriers or language deficiency will be a killer upon enrollment.
Last but not least is the degree you wish to pursue. Universities are always more established in teaching certain courses than others. Do your research on what you wish to study and the level of teaching and support the school can offer. Try not to rely too much on rankings because rankings are based on a set of criteria, which are may not be relevant to your decision. Eg. NUS may rank higher in Business Administration than say SMU, because it does not mean you will benefit more from the student. It could be because they conduct more extensive research or hire more consultants to helm that area.
I hope this helps! If you need more help on college consulting, drop me a PM. We give first consultations for free too, if you want to do a quick run through face to face. -

There is no central authority that assesses or accords recognition to degrees for employment into the Public Service. In general, degrees from universities accredited by the home government of the country where the university is located will be considered for appointment into the Public Service. This applies to degrees obtained full-time or part-time, through distance learning or twinning programmes etc. Each public service agency decides on the skills required for their respective jobs, and qualification may be one proxy for the required skills. For overseas professional qualifications, agencies will check whether these are recognised by the relevant professional bodies in Singapore.

MOE does not restrict your choice of university, so long as the university is of reputable standing. The course of study should be rigorous and provides relevant subject content for you to teach at the secondary school or junior college level. We welcome you to discuss your choice of university and country of study with our scholarship officers.
Law

Foreign-qualified lawyers who pass the FPE can apply to the Director of Legal Services under section 36B of the Legal Profession Act for registration to practise in permitted areas of Singapore law. The permitted areas would include areas such as banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions and intellectual property law. Foreign lawyers must have at least three years of relevant legal practice or work, which may be gained in Singapore or overseas, before they can apply to sit for the FPE.

Thank you zeit.
Am looking at Science degree, eg Chemistry, Biotech, Food Science etc. Since professional bodies recognition is not required, should be fine if it is a Project 985/211 or their MOE recognised university? -
