The nmos may not look challenging but remember most students only start training in p4-5. Like verykiasu said p5-6 is when most students are able to make tremendous progress. The nmos covers the basics of a lot of topics, including p6 topics like speed circle rate and very basic algebra. Actually if we look carefully there are many problem sums that look like psle questions.
The ripmwc 1st round is indeed of a different kind of challenge from smops. My student managed to squeeze into second round by 53% only. Verykiasu just wondering how's your son did in ripmwc? Does he has the same experience?
the 53% you mentioned above is the score ? which percentile does it belong to ?
my kid did not make it to 2nd round of RIPMWC, did not go for the related training....he was focusing on SMOPS
I did an analysis of those RIPWMC top students name list and compared with SMOPS platinum name list and realised that NOT many of them scored in both .... mostly or may be half did well in one or another.... -

perhaps if it appears to easy, parents feel it is nothing different from normal textbook, thus Terry Chew embed some difficult concepts in them....
yea agreed. I was referringto the one that is specifically meant for p1-2. Just warning parents to go easy when they use that book on their p1-2 children. Some difficult concepts are embedded in some questions. -

score 53% 98.6 percentile, 50+th, must be too many students with the same scores. From past experiences top scorers for Australia maths/American maths competitions are also mostly different from smo ones. So each competition requires slightly different training approach.

quite undecided where to send my son for the second round apmops -
I quite sure that my student represent the lowest scores because he was in the 50+th position when I count the name. By right only top 50 but 57 invited so at least the last 8 got the exact same score.
Eh where else offered apmops training? I know last year mathoasis did but this year it seems quiet or I just did not check the website very recently. -

Lol nah I pulled out of the competition for apmops. I directed my student to go somewhere else as he has already done most past year papers. I guess centres can offer better. I want the best for my student, after all in sec schs many guys start losing interest in maths and the honor list will undergo a makeover. This is the last chance for pri sch students to make their mark in their pri sch career.
But I am still in the race for nmos

Aiyo, don't lidat say leh...very demoralising for the kid. At least they got something, better than nothing, which means they have at least attained a certain level. It'll help boost their confidence, not necessarily for DSA. Heard that some platinum also didn't get in thru DSA mah, while others with lesser awards got in. So just be happy that at least the kid got to a certain level, and encourage them to work hard and better themselves. My daughter is from the same primary school (Queenstown Primary). No MO trainer was hired. He was the only student with Platinum award in SMOPS in the school's history.
I happened to come across a program in okto channel a few months back about young achievers, ie. kids who were recognised in one way or another because of their talents.
Lim Jeck was featured and his parents were being interviewed. Seems like his dad is a Maths lecturer in a local University. In the show, Jeck was seen writing some complicated Maths equations on the blackboard.
I guess his interest and talent in Maths were cultivated since young.
