CA1 was the wake-up call.
When we revised for SA1, it was revision the second time round. because CA1 was conducted not long, in February, and SA1 started shortly two months' later, in April.
The fact that we had gone through first round in CA1, somehow had helped us to revise for SA1, as the concepts revised were still fresh, in our mind.
On first week of January 2018, Science Tr did warn our whole P5 class. She said it is normal, to experience a drop in Science, from P4 to P5.
But when results were actually released in March CA1, the most glaring drop was in Science. Tr said, \"Wah ! you all did so badly, although I did mention before the expected drop ! Some of you failed, others border-line pass ....\"
P5 SA1 :-
quite a lot of us in class, managed to bounce back, because CA1 woke us up with a rude shock.
That entire one month before SA1, Science Tr gave our whole class several sets of mock, practice past year papers, helped us to revise, and practise. Practice and Practice ! After that, she went through all MCQ, and OEQ. She spent sometime, on OEQ. That helped.
So, for those schools that did not conduct CA1, but only SA1, is normal to experience the drop.

DD;s school do not have CA1, only Assessment for Learning (AFL). but the AFL is not full exam format paper. only oneMrsKiasu:

or two section of the full paper. i still prefer school to have CA1, as least we dont feel the extreme shock for SA1. -

when you say your side \"drop\", it also depends on what kind of standard your school had set, for the papers.
eg
for Science SA1 :-
suppose your daughter school's standard set is high : close to that of PSLE standard set, if drop a bit ... never mind.
Did your daughter find the Science paper overall, easy or difficult ?
But if say, another P5 child school's standard set is low, and drop badly .. better buck up during June holidays.
Every school's standard, is different. Every school's sequence of P5 Science Topics taught, also differ.
But eventually, regardless of which primary school we come from : all of us will be sitting for the same, identical paper one year later, both Section A (MCQ) and Section B (OEQ), come 2019 September PSLE. -
Indeed. Access the child’s performances base on his/her ability and according to the paper - not comparing to other’s marks. Identify areas for improvement and mistakes to avoid.
(Speaking from mainly Mother Tongue point of view) Many reasons why that should be the case:
- Class average may not be an accurate indicator for CL. Your child may have been ‘promoted’ or moved to another class based on his/her performance last year. Majority of the students in that class may be there already (i.e. of a certain standard/foundation).
- New sections may have been included (P5 vs P4). 语文应用 (some new question types), 完成对话 etc.
- Standards and testable sections differ. School’s tested sections/way of testing may still differ from one another in SA1 (although by SA2 they should all be standardized to prepare for P6 format). For example, certain school’s actually provided students with the first and last paragraph in Paper 1 (compo writing) due to the change from 4 to 6 pics in 看图作文. Some schools still test Oral using pictures (some even get students to describe 4 pics - like compo, but verbally) while some test Oral passage reading using textbook passages. Meanwhile, some schools’ SA1 Paper 2 are not the complete P6 format (i.e. full marks 90) while some are. -

i agreed that the paper's standard differs between schools. My DC scored avg of 75+ marks in his P5 SA1 but did well in psle and now in top sch. Contrary, his friend in the top class didnt perform as well in psle. Parents, dont be disheartened. Move forward and most importantly, the child must feel motivated and has the inner desire to succeed.
Yup. This is one of the most important qualities to have in a child early on. It will really pay off in the long run. -

DD's SA1 results is back
P4 to P5
Eng : 81 drop to 69
MT: 70 drop to 66
Sci : 66 to 73.5
Maths : 72 drop to 41
Really caught me by surprise. Didn't expect her to fail Maths when she been coping well with her 1st CA1 and normal practice paper.
Sigh... don't know if she can improve for SA2. Was still thinking of go DSA next year.
How to do I don’t know .
I am looking for math tutor in AMK area .
I am very disappointed :frustrated: -
