[Bukit Merah] Primary Schools

janet88:
Janet,APS is really overhyped. many register their kids there although there is no proven record.
there are several good schools in bukit merah.
What do you know about the school that makes you think that it is \"overhyped\"? Maybe you would like to share with fellow forummers here? -
qms:
there is no benchmark as the school is very new.

hubby used to tutor 2 kids from the school. it's hard to tell where the students compare with those from other schools. there is no way of telling how the first batch of P6 students will do for psle.
there are established schools and also new schools in bukit merah but why does APS have such a high take up rate? -
janet88:
You used the word \"overhyped\", so I had assumed that you felt the school didn't deserve the attention it received. If it is purely based on the observation you mentioned above and not on any insider information about the school, is it right to conclude that the school is \"overhyped\"?there is no benchmark as the school is very new.

then I take back the word.

Hi All,
My boy is due to register for P1 this year. We shortlisted Gan Eng Seng (2C <1km), New Town (2A2) and Queenstown (2C 1-2km). Principles have changed within these few years but didn’t notice much positive or negative comments. Hence, would like to tap onto your knowledge to share your view or feedback on these 3 schools. Thanks in advance. -

janet88:
There are a lot of condo & HDB flats in Bukit Merah. Even though Alexandra primary started not too long, but this nearby school to residents staying in Bukit Merah, is very conducive for parents with young kids, in terms of distance travel. Hence, Alexandra primary is very much sought after. Nothing beats a nearby, convenient school, esp. with the weekly Cca commitment, compulsory extra enrichment lessons held after school end (Mon - Fri)APS is really overhyped. many register their kids there although there is no proven record.

Cantonment Pri is more of.. at a disadvantage location as it is near Keppel/city area. Not many HDB flats ard.
Does any kind soul know Cantonment last yr PSLE passing rate %? How many went express n normal? Called school but refused to disclose. -

My relative is teaching in GESPS the advise is unless i can guarantee that the child is able to go into top 2 classes every yr. Else the trend is other average classes majority go to normal stream in sec. They usually get only HODs to teach the top classes. So if u r in an average class, not much to grow.Hi All,

As for New Town and Queenstown, I have no idea internally whats going on. However, from observation the 2 schools around that area has rental 1/2 rooms flats. So it depends on if u r particular with the profile of your child's classmates. -
I’m currently <1km of NT, 1-2km of QT and GESP. I’m eyeing at QT for <1km bcos I’m using my new address under enbloc (I fall within the delivery possession date for this). My new blk just 3mins away from QT. My teacher friend who lives infront of QT said that the principal of QT was her primary school principal, and her colleague at MOE hq says that their school program is quite established.
NT, got some inside word that IMH is supporting the school (troubled kids?). Maybe can look past this, I’ve seen their programs on their photo gallery, looks fun/interesting.
GES, I like that they have taekwondo, and their teacher’s profile on the site looks really fun. The principal was transferred from a very good sch.
Overall, there’s no right or wrong answers. Just follow your instincts and if any particular niche is more suitable for your kid. If QT falls through, then I’m going for Cantonment.
Even though it’s >2km, but their school lifestyle looks very interesting. Majority of the pri school leaving kids went into pretty good Sec sch. (Peeped into their FB, and the kids who left comments profile)… eg like Hwa Chong, Geylang Methodist, Raffles).
Decisions, decisions.
