School subj teachers usually get the kids to prepare pymt & teachers order fr sch bookstore. So, usually it’s sufficient to go by tt arrgmt.


We chose not to stress kids too much as they’re getting the stress fr sch alr esp towards Term 3. Unless for parents who wants child to tactics beyond previous year’s papers. Then again hv to be mindful syllabus changes & format diff & kids might get confused & further stressed out.

In fact PSLE year, parents shld balance stresses & scale down usual tuition & watch kids emotional & physical exhaustion esp if child is also into puberty year.

By year or by topic is better?

i)

for languages (English / Chinese / Higher Chinese ) -

EPH (and some other) publishers print only by year. For languages, publishers never print (produce), by Topic.

ii)

But, for Maths / Science, publishers do produced 2 type : by year, as well as by Topic, can choose.

For Science -
usually people parents to buy by Topic, because it makes Science revision easier.

For Maths, some people prefer by Topic, others prefer by year.
When you go through revision with your child, let child decide which one makes it easier for him / her.

Do you let your kids try to do past years papers now or wait till P6? Do those that they know first?

Suggest you only dish out P6 exampapers according to term yr child completes coz some topics may yet to be covered by teacher. Also, diff sch go at diff pace, so check if child hv not covered some topics to relieve those qns they’ll not be able to answer.

For PSLE papers, best to start off after T2. You can do during June sch holidays if sch teacher hv not started. Most sch teachers wld be doing it as a class activity & timed with exam condition with full exam instructions. So u might not wanna duplicate that effort. Kids will end up feeling disinterested bcoz its repeat work (either home or sch).

In this case, I'd suggest not to do psle papers first. Should fix the foundation and make sure he knows the syllabus for p5 properly before taking on new topics.

Better to get grounding right firmly before rushing into exam papers. It’ll be more demoralizing if the child can’t do.

But if u help revise all the foundation u’stang & practices by P5 yearend, can do some papers. Make full use of every weekend & Sept, Nov/Dec sch holiday to step up. If not, just help keep revising work , & target esp those areas yr child is weak at. Help yr child get the footing right before sprinting. One cannot run before they know the steps for walking.

Thanks Zappy and Esteema for your inputs. Have been revising since Jan this year and more disheartening news surfaced. DS seems to have very very bad memory. He cant recall things that I teach yesterday. He will give a blank face as if is something new to him. I have to "re-revise" with him again and again. This make the process very slow and dry. The more I revised with him, the more things he dont know. I am scare and worry now. So much things to revise and teach and yet so little time.

He needs time to study, do homework, attends tuition, attends remedial, learn tingxie, do tuition homework etc. Left little time to do revision actually.
Feel like crying now… so sad

Oh. Sounds like there are other learning issues. How has his grades been showing. Any other clues?


I don’t adv pounding him too much with tuition. Tuition is not a panecea for pushing grades. I only let my kids go for tuition bcoz they get restless with me. They’re bored for diff reasons. They get stimulated with group learning & need faster pace.

Hv you tried checking his learning style or attempt diff ways of learning with your child? When kids are starting P1, I’ve tried visual, sensory & audio learning. When I get my kids to close eyes & just listen to me reading facts to them (of coz I intimate so they don’t get bored with my voice lor), I discovered they’re more motivated to read (visual learners) to find out for themselves. When I do those eco-garden exploration & leave artwork, I discovered their curiosity pique further.

I know P5 might be a tad late, but if can help sparkle his interest abit more, might go further esp when hit P6, things gets more stressful.

One of the things I do with kids on Chinese is have cards that helps them piece words. If they’re visual learners, they’ll rmbr better just looking for the "pang" to connect with the right word.

Hope you can help your child discover where the disconnect is to help him learn, register & recall.

Is your child taking Fish oil (Omega & DHA) regularly? If not, start today. Helps with focus and learning. If yes and mental processes still can't support, he may be a second child (by syndrome) or timid child, busy panicking. 12yrs old suitable for Vitamin B (complex). Those who are going for the kill may even consider Gingko pills, works like mental steroids, boost blood circulation and send electricity to the brain. Never allow your child to skip breakfast. If you see your child 'lazy', he has no energy to move. Need to eat.
