All About Polytechnics

JPAE - Joint Polytechnic Admissions Exercise for Higher Nitec Students are good entry for ITE students to further their Education in Polytechnic Education. However the entry criteria, besides the minimum grade achieved, is subject to the available places left after the 'O' level students admission. This as a result left very few places for all the ITE students. Many ITE students even meet the grade were unable to gain a place in the Polytechnic education.
A Polytechnic education will provide a diploma to the ITE students and will help them find a better job and they can even advance further to a degree or advance diploma course.
By not gaining a place in the Polytechnic, the future of these ITE students look grim. We all understand that with ITE qualification, the salary is much lower than a diploma.
Ministry should give every ITE students who achieved the required grade a chance to have a Polytechnic Education. It is sad that message to the ITE students are not most are not fit to enter Polytechnic education and they are supposed to do lower level job.
We all also understand that most ITE students family are not well to do. It will be tough to enrol into a private institute to take a private diploma. Next question is how recognised is this private diploma?
I strongly encouraged the Ministry to set up another Polytechnic so that there are enough places to give these ITE students a new hope rather than \"It is the End\" route for them.

what is the Cut off point, for admission into Polytechnic ?
depend on individual Poly, and also on depend the individual choice of Faculty of study ? can refer to past years’ Cut off Admission entry point.
ITE students need to work towards the goal, of entering that particular Poly, and for that particular Diploma course, after checking the Cut-off point.
if you have a goal, set your goal & work hard towards achieving it -
Even ‘O’ level students may may not get a place in the courses they apply to. Across all entry qualifications, getting the eligible grades for poly entry doesn’t assure a place in a particular course as it depends on demand and supply. I don’t think the cut off is set before taking in students; it’s most likely set by the last student taken in. I expect a certain no. of places are reserved for ITE applicants, though I don’t know for sure.

That's why I advice students to just choose a business diploma if you are not sure of your interests. It gives you more flexibility in your career options. -

Some people don't mind shift work. Shift work is compensated by aircon environment, dapper uniform and free meals at staff canteen.
You are right...why is Tourism suddenly so popular? What are the possible jobs apart from hotel and travel agency jobs? One must have humility and high EQ to excel in this service industry.
Friend's kid doing retail management diploma and went to intern at a G2000 shopfront. The kid kept complaining about picky customers and having to stand all day! Not a bed of roses.
Another positive thing I can think of is overseas stints (and emigration, esp to Australia). Tourism students can often intern overseas. After graduation, they can apply to work in overseas 5-star hotels, and many of them actually do. I've met a couple of Singaporean hotel graduates in some 5-star hotels I stayed in in Australia. They told me about ‘Subclass 457 Visa’, and do I need to explain further their motives? :evil:

I'm sure you guys must have met many Singaporean tourism students in IHG, Starwood, Accor, Capitaland hotels in China and parts of Asia too. -

Honestly, if emigration is a priority, I think the best course to go into is nursing. -

Didn't know our nurses are heading overseas given that we need nurses in our govt hospitals. Shouldn't it the 60s-70s when UK hired a lot of Eng-speaking nurses from Singapore and Malaysia? -

Pay is much better for nurses in uk, aus, nz and the working conditions are much better. Step into any govt hospital in singapore and you will see that there are a large number of non-singaporean nurses. -

Actually there are many non-EEA nurses and doctors in NHS hospitals in the UK. Mostly from Philippines, India and Pakistan..zeit:

In June, Home Office just relaxed the tier-2 visa restrictions on non-EEA, non-UK nurses and doctors. :evil:
