Went through the PV interview at St Hilda’s. It was a nightmare.

80 hrs, compulsory reading program of 2-3 hrs once every weekday. Other ad-hoc will be once or twice a year for school events.
So in short have to take afternoon (or morning) off work once every week for about 40 weeks (10mths)! The program only allow 1 parent, not to be split so to let the student to get used to you. I can’t afford to take half day off every week for 10mths. It is not longer whether the parent can commit. You have to stay jobless to commit this, with no guarantee to get into this school. Really absurd.

I’d say your employer is the one who is absurd. Not letting you have a few hours off each week? Can’t you work out an arrangement where you make up the missed hours at another time?

I had such an inflexible employer. Quit my job for the sake of doing PV for my child (at another school tho - only 40 hrs required). Now I’ve found a better employer who allows me flexi hours and I work around my kid’s school hours. Bliss.

I think the group that you have to blame are the parents. If they vote with their feet and go for another school (Poi Ching?), St Hilda may not have enough demand for PV and may have to reduce their requirements (to a level similar to, maybe, 80% of schools out there).

Unfortunately, because there are indeed many people who can contribute such hours, and with demand exceeding supply (for Phase 2B), the school has to impose stiffer conditions to deter some people.

After reading this, i'm not sure how i should be feeling to have already committed 150hours for PV program since my child was 2yo.

Which school requires 150 hours??!


As far as I know: only NYPS and SHPS require 80 hours.

All the rest require 40 hours.

All SHHK schools, starting from 2020 registration (previously didn’t state specifically but is understood), will need min. 80 hrs as well.

If its any consolation, remember the intention of PV is to get the parent familiar with the school. Only the most dedicated parents need apply. The result is that dedicated parents who are able to bear through the pain should be ahead in the queue.

I understand your pain, but if you managed to get through Phase 2B in the school, not only will you be in a good position to know if the school is fit for your child. You will support the school for the next 6 years!
