Compare RGS vs NYGH

I think most important question not answered is what happen to the girls who cannot make it after repeat in rgs? Do they then transfer to another school to take o level? What is the percentage of those in RI whose A level cannot get them into university?

But what I dont understand is why does NYGH set such a high internal promotion criteria above 65 and not want to ensure that more of the students can be promoted to JC like the case of RGS? valiant88, perhaps the reason why your question is not answered is that there are really very very few RGS girls who couldn’t make it? I only know of one girl so far who repeated one year in RGS, and then went on to RI(JC) and now in local U.

Those girls inside RI who don't do well, either don't do well at end of JC(1) during Promo exam or dont do well in actual A-level : are they more from RGS (IP) programme, or more from JAE students who came (entered RI) from other outside Secondary schools after O-level ?

If it is the HCI (JC side) that fixed such a requirement, then no choice, just have to take note and work hard for it. Hwa Chong is a top school, not a charity. Either one works hard for it or someone more deserving takes over the place.

I believe it was based on historical statistics that only students who meet certain criteria are likely to perform well in A levels. So those who don’t meet this promotional criteria, even if the school allows you to take A levels, at the end of the day, the results will still be mediocre. But isn’t there a O level class set up to help the handful who can’t manage to cope? End of the day, regardless which IP school, I believe a handful would inadvertently fall by the side, after all not everyone is suitable to do IP.

For RGS, I have heard of someone not coping well and her dad subsequently pulled her out and she was sent overseas. My nephew said he met a few who had “fallen by the side” type. But they were all “hush hush”. Nobody likes to wash dirty linen in public so it could be well expected that everyone will “diam diam” and nobody wants to share tales of failure.

You people make it sound like HCI (JC) prefers that these IP students give way to make room for more O-level 2 pointers.

For dd’s batch, quite a no of those in O level class were in sports.

Not sure about their t score.

I've heard the same regarding HCI (JC) making the requirement of NYGH. The girls were lagging behind the HCI boys in JC.

As for RGS, very very few girls repeat the year. Certainly none in my dd's year and I've only ever heard of one from another year who repeated a year, then went on to RI and is now in uni. MommyNg and I could possibly be referring to the same girl. There are girls who leave for overseas studies, but the ones I know of didn't leave because they couldn't cope. They left because they felt it was an easier route to get into overseas unis.

What is the Promotional criteria like for RGS (IP), from end of Y1 until end of Y4 into RI (JC1 or Year 5) ?

Minimum of GPA 2.0

This is even more lenient than RI’s promo criterion of GPA >= 2.4 for Y4 to JC1 for the boys. No wonder you guys said that very few gals would drop out of RGS once they got in. Of course majority of the gals will achieve GPA >= 3.2. But it’s still reassuring to know that the effects of one bad academic year will not be too drastic.

Someone asked about the % of RI(JC) grads who qualify for local uni. I believe no JC publishes such info. However, from the website below, RI(JC)’s UAS was reported to be between 85-87.8 for the past 2 years.

Your dh was in RJC maybe 25-30 years ago? Times have changed. RGS girls are not lagging behind RI boys. They are equally as strong academically as the RI boys.
