Compare RGS vs NYGH

Hi All,
What is the Promotional criteria like for RGS (IP), from end of Y1 until end of Y4 into RI (JC1 or Year 5) ? -

Minimum of GPA 2.0Hi All,
What is the Promotional criteria like for RGS (IP), from end of Y1 until end of Y4 into RI (JC1 or Year 5) ? -
mommyNg:
Thank you for sharing this MommyNg. Very good info to know. It seems that the promotion criteria to JC for NYGH is very strict and these are internal criteria to promote to JC1, resulting in about 30-40 students not making it every year. But what I dont understand is why does NYGH set such a high internal promotion criteria above 65 and not want to ensure that more of the students can be promoted to JC like the case of RGS? Am I missing something? Sorry, if this is silly question, just very perplexed.
Perhaps, if your end goal is to have a \"safety net\" to stay in the secondary school for the whole 4 years. If your end goal is to end up in the respective IP JCs, here's the analysis based on personal stories, experiences and school P's sharing:phtthp:
correct.
Compare these two IP Girls' schools : Nanyang Girls' High is a much, safer IP school to go to, due to existence of an O-level track to fall back upon, during emergency crisis.
At RGS, if unable to meet promotion criteria up into Year 5 (RI), can repeat one year or else exit.
Approximate number of students not able to move to their respective IP JCs (NYGH -> HCI, RGS -> RI) per cohort each year:
NYGH- 23-25 (O level class) + 0-2 (exit/repeat) + 10-15 (Sec 4 IP fail to meet promotion criteria to HCI) = 33-42
RGS- 0-2 (exit/repeat)
Note1 on promotion criteria:
NYGH - to remain IP for Sec 1 to 3 = 60-64 (msg4); for Sec 4 to JC = 65-69 (msg3); the best L1R5 O level score from 2016 O level class was 15 (before discount from HCL/CCA)
RGS - for Sec 1-4 to JC = 50 (GPA 2.0)
Note2 on subject selection:
NYGH - to do triple science in Sec 3, need min 65-70 in Sec 2 (msg3); to continue to take at least 2 sciences in Sec 4, need min 60-64 in Sec 3 (msg4) otherwise can only take 1 science (chemistry)
RGS - no requirement, free to chooose as long as pass (50)
Both schools can be highly stressful: NYGH -> worry about whether able to meet min msg every year, RGS -> worry about whether able to cope in JC? How do the IP girls perform at A levels?
One should consider the fit of the child with the school's programmes and culture when choosing Sec schools, rather than the perception of how \"safe\" the schools seems to be
*caveat: the above numbers were as accurate as what was known at the time I heard it, the actual numbers may vary and change depending on cohort and/or new school policies. So don't :torchme: me for it! -
I think most important question not answered is what happen to the girls who cannot make it after repeat in rgs? Do they then transfer to another school to take o level? What is the percentage of those in RI whose A level cannot get them into university?

As far as I heard from reliable sources, it is HCI (JC) side that wanted such requirement. They complained that quite a number of NYGH girls who came to HCI via IP didn’t do as well in A levels than the rest (they wanted HCI to maintain excellent A level results). Or maybe they believe that 吃得苦中苦,方为人上人? 又或许是用泪与汗换来的成绩和回忆,才会特别珍惜? Anyway, what to do? The girls feed into their school so they have a bigger say on what is required?

valiant88, perhaps the reason why your question is not answered is that there are really very very few RGS girls who couldn’t make it? I only know of one girl so far who repeated one year in RGS, and then went on to RI(JC) and now in local U. -
mommyNg:
Those girls inside RI who don't do well, either don't do well at end of JC(1) during Promo exam or dont do well in actual A-level : are they more from RGS (IP) programme, or more from JAE students who came (entered RI) from other outside Secondary schools after O-level ?

If it is the HCI (JC side) that fixed such a requirement, then no choice, just have to take note and work hard for it. Hwa Chong is a top school, not a charity. Either one works hard for it or someone more deserving takes over the place.

I believe it was based on historical statistics that only students who meet certain criteria are likely to perform well in A levels. So those who don’t meet this promotional criteria, even if the school allows you to take A levels, at the end of the day, the results will still be mediocre. But isn’t there a O level class set up to help the handful who can’t manage to cope? End of the day, regardless which IP school, I believe a handful would inadvertently fall by the side, after all not everyone is suitable to do IP.
For RGS, I have heard of someone not coping well and her dad subsequently pulled her out and she was sent overseas. My nephew said he met a few who had “fallen by the side” type. But they were all “hush hush”. Nobody likes to wash dirty linen in public so it could be well expected that everyone will “diam diam” and nobody wants to share tales of failure. -

You people make it sound like HCI (JC) prefers that these IP students give way to make room for more O-level 2 pointers.

For dd’s batch, quite a no of those in O level class were in sports.
Not sure about their t score. -

I've heard the same regarding HCI (JC) making the requirement of NYGH. The girls were lagging behind the HCI boys in JC.

As for RGS, very very few girls repeat the year. Certainly none in my dd's year and I've only ever heard of one from another year who repeated a year, then went on to RI and is now in uni. MommyNg and I could possibly be referring to the same girl. There are girls who leave for overseas studies, but the ones I know of didn't leave because they couldn't cope. They left because they felt it was an easier route to get into overseas unis.
