Glad to hear your boy’s made good progress! Kids on the spectrum have different degrees of the typical traits of ASD. I would say the best gauge would be a couple of years from now when your boy’s maturing, to see how he copes with situations of different stress levels. Echolalia, stimming, etc, while common, may not apply to everyone who’s on the spectrum. I’ve had clients before who were diagnosed with ASD, but seemed almost neurotypical (until I noticed a couple of giveaways). I’ve had students with ASD who simply couldn’t make eye contact for more than 3 seconds, but could get humour, figurative language, etc. I’ve also had students who could maintain eye contact, but who had difficulty verbalising or expressing their thoughts in a conventional manner.


At the end of the day though, it shouldn’t really matter what the label is. I still believe it is important, at least for the purpose of better understanding the child’s needs, but post-intervention, when the child understands how to adhere to expectations, then the label doesn’t really matter anymore. In fact, there’s a cliche in my line of work that most neurotypical people, to some degree, have experienced traits from a learning difficulty at least once in their lives. Hard to ascertain its veracity, but it does make a point about how differently our minds work, even those under a label.

My Daughter is 10 year old(In P5) now. Her school teacher mentioned she might have mild autism and asked us to get it assessed. Actually her academic is good and normal routine everything is perfect… the only abnormality that I see is her eye contact is slightly bad when talking… my husband got so mad on the teachers remark and wasn’t willing to take her to doctor, now that she is in P5, I want to get it assessed., but not sure where to get it checked for mild auto.she is a perfectly normal person otherwise . Appreciate if someone can recommend some doctors here…

Are you in a hurry, to see the doctors ?

if not in a hurry, go via Polyclinic get a referal letter to KK Hospital, tell them u want to see a doctor who are familiar with autism cases. This way, is cheaper, with a referal letter. The doctor will ask u, why u suspect your daughter of autism. So, u just tell the doctor, what her Form Tr and subject Tr in school, had observed her.

But if u are in a hurry, then maybe someone here can recommend u a private doctor

Hi All,

its been some time since i came in. Would like to share some updates on my boy and also seek some advise from some parents who have went through this before.

My boy diagnosed with speech delay at 2.5yr and suspected of ASD. So we went through ST and OT therapy at dynamics and then at Thomson CDC. He is now 6 and has improved over the last 3.5 years. He is shy, does communicate with others, and has eye contact. His speech is normal now but has problems with literacy. So dylexsia is on our radar now. He is currently with rainbow yp. Aside EIPIC from rainbow, he also attends his normal preschool. To be frank, i find it overwhelming myself. but he seems to be taking it ok. but lately, he told me he dun wan to go rainbow anymore (**there is nothing wrong with rainbow teachers or curriculum, pls dun get the wrong idea. for parents who wanna know what kind of lessons/therapy at rainbow, you can PM me for more details. i am grateful for the help given to my boy. the teachers at rainbow have been great). We are contemplating to withdraw him from rainbow and just focus on his preschool and outside lessons. However as rainbow’s curriculum has been tailored to prepare the child for primary education (maintram/sped), i am not sure if the withdrawal will do more harm or benefit. Anyone has withdraw the child from eipic before and focus on external lessons for the kids ? Anyone has such experience and can u share how did you manage the child in mainstream school during the transition ? i saw some parents sharing that they have arranged for other external lessons if the child is no longer attending eipic.

Secondly, the teachers in rainbow keep asking me to do a school readiness test. (FYI, there are 2 tests here. One is school readiness test and the other is the KKH diagnostic test for confirmation of ASD status. We have also decided to skip the diagnostic test as he is showing improvements). Anyone know what is the benefits of this school readiness test and done this before? Is it necessary to have this document in place even if he is going to mainstream school ?

My boy does face the same issues as you. He is also diagnosed with speech delay at 2.5yr and selective mutism at 3 and just confirmed with mild autism today sighs.We went through ST and OT and psychology sessions at KKH. He is 7 and has much improved now. He is shy and does communicate with others, and has eye contact. I sent him to DAS because suspected him of dyslexia but his dyslexia test shows negative. And after he turned 6.5, he can read quite well after attending 1 yr of DAS preschool programme.

Anyone who has children with diagnosed mild autism, please help to connect me to whatever resources you may have. Thank you very much.
