At this point of time, if P6 parents are still looking for tutors to teach their children, I hope you hear what I have to share. I have tuition agent friends who shared that parents often ask questions like how many students is the Tutor teaching ? How many P6 students ? What is the grade of the students for PSLE last year? I mean what have other students’ results got to do with what will be your children’s results? If you are desperate looking for Tutors at this time now, be glad that you can find one as P6 students basically have only 7 months worth of teaching value and most tutors will not want to teach. Seeking a tutor at P6 is really too late to do much remedy but if you can have intensive tuition, it certainly helps a lot for weak children.

i'm equally amazed parents can ask a tutor questions like how his students fared last year. :slapshead: every child is different. for a child who is weak, getting a B is an achievement. for a child whose foundation is strong, it depends greatly on how careful he/she is to score that A*.
it's a lot of hard work for the tutor to put in if he/she takes a p6 student now. the parents have to help ensure their kids put in effort on days when there is no tuition.

Hi, my child is in P5 this year.

        1. Do I understand correctly that most schools will teach everything in P5 and P6 will just be revision?

        2. Is it common for child to have all subjects on tuition/tuition centre?

        Thanks.

          1) No. There are still new topics till around mid year or later, depending on schools.

          2) Probably not uncommon but this shouldn’t have an impact on what your plans are for your own child.

Hi, my child is in P5 this year.

            1. Do I understand correctly that most schools will teach everything in P5 and P6 will just be revision?

            Answer you, in detail

            a) English

English is the only subject, that has No difference between (P5 and P6 level), because ALL the named components tested inside English Main Paper 2 are identical, exactly the same, inside (P5 & P6 SA1 mid-year and SA2 Prelim). Some schools do not even conduct (P5 and P6 CA1), so we shall not discuss P6 CA1, here.

For English, following are the named components, inside Paper 2 -

            Grammar
            Vocabulary
            Vocabulary cloze
            Grammar cloze
            Comprehension cloze

            Visual Text Comprehension
            Open-ended Comprehension
            Editing for Spelling & Grammar
            Synthesis / Transformation

            b) Chinese

P6 chapters for Normal Chinese are different, from that taught in P5.

Hence, come to P6 Chinese, there are still a lot to teach, to learn, and to cover, at least another 10 more new P6 chapters. The same goes (apply to) for P6 Higher Chinese chapters.

            c)

P6 Maths Topics like Speed, Area of Circle (using pie = 3.14 to calculate or compute), etc. are taught only in P6 Mainstream, not in P5 level.

            d)

P6 Science Topics like Living Together in a Community, Characteristics of the Environment, Man's Impact on the Environment, Pollution, Food Web (Chain), Forms & Sources of Energy, Conversion of Energy from one form into another, Predators, Structural Adaptation, Adaptation for Survival, etc.

are taught only in P6 Mainstream, but not in P5 level, although some primary schools may have already taught \"Forces\" in P5 Mainstream, instead of in P6.

So, P6, there are still quite a number of Science chapters to teach, and to cover.

However, GEP students inside GEP schools are different. They might have already covered or been taught these P6 Mainstream topics, by the end of their P5 GEP advanced, Science designed curriculum.

            2. Is it common for child to have all subjects on tuition/tuition centre?

Up to P5 level, it is still alright to have tuition a child is weak in, in a number of subjects. This is common.

But come to P6, it is a crucial (important) consolidation time, because time is extremely tight & precious.

In school, a lot of homework and many mock Practice assignment papers are given by P6 subject Teachers to practise, given one Paper after another consecutively non-stop to practise, all the 4 subjects coming in now concurrently, one by one, so time is very, very tight, precious. You can feel the stress seeping in after Chinese New Year, when P6 CA1 is round the corner (February). CA1 will \" force\" you to study, shift up into gear 1 momentum, for Round 1 warm-up training exercise.

Therefore, only when necessary, then go for tuition or if
A child is still very weak, in certain subject. Otherwise, you should be consolidating and revise at home, if you are able to manage that subject, on your own.

At P6, if one keep going for tuition in All subjects, not only will you be burnt out fast, but also leave you with No (little) time for revision, make you panic even more.

            Thanks.

For PSLE preparation, instead of trying to cover everything, it would be more effective to focus on weak areas and also areas of quick win.

For each subject, identify the weak area, e.g. Chinese…it could be oral, it could be composition, identify the weak area and then have a strategy to improve it. Use CA1 and Prelim to guage if the strategy is working out well. Example, my gals were scoring 27-28/40 for Chinese composition and they usually write only about 3 pages like what they used to do in P5. So I "forced" them to start writing 4 pages by showing them how to lengthen the composition. With that strategy, we saw the marks going up to 31-32/40. So that’s a quick win.

Do bear in mind the mental strength of your kids, some kids break under pressure. So please keep a close watch on the kid well being.

                Hi xueyan,

Since your child is P5 this year, for all his school’s (SA1 / SA2) exam papers, for Science subject, please keep all his (P3 to P6) papers, do not throw them away, so that when come next year 2020 PSLE, they will come in handy (useful) as you may refer to his past exam papers, identify which Science topics he is weak in or mistakes made, in both MCQ and OE section , and spend some time to revise them.

For Science and Maths these 2 subjects, at P5 level, if u find that he is not improving much in a big group tuition setting, try to change to a smaller group tuition setting, eg. not more than 3 kids, max. If this still doesn’t work, look for a private good tutor, go to your house.

Also, help (guide) him to plan out a weekly (daily) timetable routine, so that your son can learn to study on his own, when u are not around or busy. Guide (motivate) him to take responsibility, of his own learning. Praise and hug him more often. When he made slight, minor improvement, keep encouraging him, with positive words. P5 is the right (appropriate) time, start timetable planning, although some children had already started much earlier on, guided by their own parents.

Is he having a handphone, at P5? Try to curb and control usage of his handphone time. Set a definite time, per day, where he is allowed to use handphone. You must be very firm, as a parent, on this handphone thing. Otherwise, if handphone control him, control his life, very hard

                  2) Probably not uncommon but this shouldn't have an impact on what your plans are for your own child.

Tuition is a personal choice based on the child's perceived strengths and weaknesses, as well as the capabilities and means of the family.

In drawing out a plan for PSLE preparation, you, as a parent, are in the best position to assess whether tuition is truly needed.

                    Hi
I am slightly surprise that in P6, you will advise less tuition. From what i know, a lot of parents will start to have tuition for all subjects in P6 just to make sure they have the last push.

I will monitor the school whether they have any supplementary class after school. I understand this may not happen to all school.

My boy is slightly ADD and get drifted away easily so I am really nervous. You are right to say that he has to study on his own. We plan schedule together.

                    Chinese tuition
1 tutor to 3 kids. This is his strongest subject, so I am not so worry

                    Maths tuition
1 tutor to 2 kids. I am also teaching him myself as he take some time to grasp the concept

Science - No tuition. We bought superstar science videos to help. I am thinking to start tuition depending on SA1 results.
