Open ended have higher degree of difficulty and much harder to score. Very different from our time.

Hi bluepencil,
Parents,
how do you use the orange coloured PSLE science revision guide by Marshall Cavendish? Do your children read it thoroughly or just read selected chapters?
It is on our textbook list but our teacher does not touch it at all
So far my child attends enrichment, has tuition notes, reads textbook, do exam papers, but this orange book is hardly used
What about the Ultimate science guide by EPH. Is it a must read too???
thanks for any feedback!
This Orange book, Marshall \"PSLE Revision Guide\", even though your P6 son's class Teacher had never asked students to use it in class, but if you have already purchased a copy at home, since it had been recommended by your school inside their \"P5/P6\" booklist, can ask your son to test out himself, to what extent, or how useful, is this Orange book ?
eg.
In his most recent 2019 (February) P6 CA1 Science exam, Total, how many MCQ did he get wrong, out of Total 28 MCQ set inside booklet (Section A) ? Let's say, is \" x \" questions wrong.
For each of his wrong MCQs in his P6 CA1 paper :-
1)
perhaps, get your son to read up those particular chapter(s) or Topic(s), check (confirm) if the correct answer(s) could be obtained (found) directly, after reading this Orange book ?
Out of Total x number wrong, how many questions could be answered correctly, after reading this Orange book content ? Let's say, the number is \"y\".
2)
Repeat above step (1), with another EPH \"Ultimate Science Guide\".
Do the same thing.
Out of Total x number wrong, how many MCQs could he answer correctly, if he had spent some time reading up this \"Ultimate Science Guide\", beforehand (first) ? Let's say, is \"z\".
Ask him, between these 2, which book can help him more, in terms of reducing the number of MCQ answered wrongly substantially, out of \"x\" ? Compare his \"y\" and \"z\".
Is it EPH or Marshall, more useful (practical) ?
He is the best person to answer, by getting him to work through each of his wrong answers, step by step in detail, in order to know (determine), which is the \"MUST\" read book. -

Thanks for the idea. I guess whatever reference book you have, just diligently refer to it for those parts that you are weak in. Most of us don't have time to read everything from cover to cover... -
For science, we read two guidebook - one is Ultimate Science Guide and the other is Your Companion to Science. I have my gals read them cover to cover during the June holidays. The additional info in these books (or whichever science guide book) help compliment the school notes.
On top of having enough knowledge, there are techniques that the kids need to master in order to do well for open ended questions. MCQ also have techniques to increase probability of getting it right. -
My child is esp weak in Mcq. How to score better? do exam papers? do assessment bk?
Also when my child reads these guidebooks, a lot goes in but much less comes out ie, the answers are still not well worded sigh -
And I have recently asked a science psle marker ex-teacher before. I asked if it is really possible to write a good complete answer for open ended questions. To my surprise, he said "Yes why not? In my experience of marking psle science exam papers, I have seen full marks for open ended before. I believe he meant the whole section of open ended, and not just one question with full marks.
Goodness, I wonder what those students are made up of… I think it is more than just understanding the concept. It is also about being able to word an answer complete and well. I think these students really have good memory? plus understanding the concept of course. -
For science:
1. Open ended questions need to answer with keywords and theory. You cannot just give a straight forward answer. Eg. When asked why a metal spoon feels cold when touched but not a wooden spoon. Most kids will answer because metal is a good conductor of heat. But this answer is not good enough. You probably have to answer that metal is a better conductor of heat than wood hence it can conduct heat away from hand faster than the wood.
2. For MCQ, my strategy with my gals was to strike out the 2 obviously wrong choices first and then focus on the remaining 2 choices. You now have a 50% chance of getting it right as oppose to 25%. -

It is definitely possible. The child needs to have a scientific brain ie a scientific way of thinking the logical reasons and explaining them out in words (those very specific keywords that the syllabus uses and needs them to throw back at the script marker).

If you look at the whole Science syllabus, there is a summary diagram/flowchart at the back of every book. It shows you the entire map of what the science syllabus wants the kids to know. Very logical and simple. Just stick to those keywords and concepts, you won’t go wrong.
Science graduate here. Maybe that’s why I can see it all at one glance. So can my kid when I draw out the chart for him.
