NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)

Guess i will just let him try for the DSA firstโฆif he manage to get through, then i got to think and make a decision.
Just thought this is a school for high performers and cannot keep worry what if he cannot cope. At least it is much easier to go via IP or O level track -
My child is keen to go to NUS high. Wonder if anyone can tell me about reporting day, can we send someone to go in our place if we are not in Singapore? Is reporting day the whole day or you can only turn up in the morning? Do you buy books and uniforms on that day?

In both NUS YLLSoM and NTU LKCSom website, both schools listed only 2 sciences are required; chemistry + either biology or Physics.walterp\" post_id=\"1905304\" time=\"1554553295\" user_id=\"30004:
Anyone knows which sciences shd the kids choose to specialise in if they hv intention to try for med in Uni?
If you are talking about being a NUSH candidate for local medicine, Majors at honours level the basic triple science subjects i.e Physics, Biology, and Chemistry.
You are competing among the best of your NUSH peers for a medicine slot in NUS and NTU (not other A-level folks)
Chemistry is not enough. Biology is a must. Hard to think about taking medicine without Biology. Physics mean that you are an all-rounder.
You need to know all the stages in their application. For LKC SoM, during submission, beside the post secondary results requirement, you also need to submit the BMAT test results. BMAT initially was adopted by Cambridge, Oxford, UCL and Imperial, subsequently LKCSoM. Now are few more UK uni and overseas uni also require BMAT.
BMAT has 3 papers and paper 2 test on Chemistry, Physics and Biology. In Med Schools pre clinical years, Biochemistry and Physiology ( biology ) knowledge are required.
As only 2 sciences are required, not extra points are given for the 3 science during the first stage selection.
For LKCSoM, the second stage is the MMI, based on past years,of all the initial applicants, about half will be selected to attend the MMI and subsequently about 25 % will be intially offered places.
For YLL SoM, after the initally application, certain percentage of the best candidates will be selected to take the FSA and SJT. points will be awarded to each stages of the selection, those with highest sores will offered until all places are filled
For both local schools, most of the applicants ( A level, NUSH, IB) have perfect if not close to perfect academic score. To enhance applicants own profiles, applicants take up job shadowing in hospitals, do medical related ARP and CIP.
certains points are given. For personal statement, do not copy others, there are software to detect copies.
Above is a brief, If child intend to try medical school, find out in detail, understand each uni application and selection processes and plan in advance.
Cut off for Class 2017 to be called up for interview is 4.7 out of 5.0.
So you can use this as a rough gauge of standard required but being called up for interview is not a guarantee of successful entry into the medical schools. A lot depends on your performance at the MMI. -
Thanks for the sharing! Does sound very competitive. DS will have to work hard for what he wants

Hi, Graduating with a strong CAP is just only 1 factor. Your DS need to develop a strong interest in medicine, the right aptitude, attitude. The whole application process is design to screen out those opportunistic applicants and those that do not possess the quality required of a good doctor.

BMAT paper 1 is IQ / logical questions, paper 2 is 3 sciences and maths. Paper 3 is agumentative written paper on any subject, most like a social technical subject.
Currently LKC MMI has 8 stations, NUS 2 tests are quite similar to MMI.
Do not get stainned with anypolice record or infestious dieases like HepB.
Best wishes -
Hi,
I am a P6 this year and would like to know whether to aim for either Hwa Chong or NUS High. I am good at math and science and am interested in these subjects. I am also really passionate about computing. However, I also like Hwa Chong as it is more all-rounded and its emphasis on Chinese culture. What are the pros and cons of joining both schools? Thanks if anybody can reply -

if you are really interested in computing, you should go for NUS High because you start learning CS (computing studies) in y1 sem 2. :rahrah: the subjects for math and science are not very challenging if you pay attention in class and for y1-y2 they are mostly from o levels. from y3 sem 2 onwards, some a level subjects will be taught. when you reach y5-y6, you will start learning university modules if you take honours in that subject. so going NUS High allows for early exposure to o level, a levels, even university modules. NUS High students are generally weaker in their mother tongue, but the difficulty of the mother tongue papers are similar to other schools' papers. You have to pass o level higher chinese (for higher chinese students), and both o and a level chinese (for express chinese students). a level chinese papers will be taken in y5 and not y6. You must pass the respective papers to graduate from NUS High.

However, there is no emphasis on Chinese culture in NUS High. -
Oh I see thank you for your reply! Also, what topics are tested in the selection test and camp. Is it secondary one level biology chemistry physics and math?
