Hi

Some questions from my discussion with friends :

To calculate estimated Tscore from SA1 results (for DSA school selection)
How do we know if school standards are higher or lower than PSLE? Any rough estimations?

School like Temasek pri, would you use 0.73?
How about Tanjong katong ? F For GEP kid use x 0.75?

Thank you.

I was adviced to take 0.71.
But which is accurate (as close to PSLE scores) - 0.71 or 0.72 or 0.73 or 0.74 or 0.75?

In the above example - why do you use 0.73? :?

Each school is different, each child is different and how each child prepares / reacts / understands the PSLE exams is different.

There is no 'right' number. No point getting fixated with a number. It's better to understand that the result is only suggesting the range of possibilities. In that respect, you can consider 0.7 to 0.75 (or even a wider range such as 0.7 to 0.8) as the range of possible scores that the child may achieve (therefore, a child scoring 320 is likely to achieve a t-score of 220 to 240, but there is also the odd chance that he scores more or less than that range).

Also, worth noting that t-score is compute based on each subject and not the combined total. Each subject has its own mean and SD to consider. Therefore, scoring high in Math and Science may not net you a high t-score (as Singapore students tend to be strong in these subjects) compare to students who can score high in EL and CL (where they tend to be weaker, esp. CL).
Hi, indeed, I actually heard before from some educators that higher marks in EL and CL are very worth it. something like for every mark earned for languages, it improves the psle score greater than for math and science. i can't work out the math behind it, cos i poor in math. but the advice is language marks are very worth it.

But goodness, languages can be a long drawn mt everest effort... at least for us...

It's not about whether it is \"worth it\" or not, right? More about whether it is feasible to achieve the high marks. Not sure what the advice regarding language marks is about but the kid should basically just try to score the highest he or she can score in all the 4 subjects.

And yes, 1 mark increase in the languages can translate to more T-score points than a 1 mark increase in Maths. That's just based on the average and standard deviation among the Singapore students as a whole. The average score in Singapore for CL for example is lower than the average score in Maths among all the students taking the PSLE exam. The standard deviation is also usually lower.

In layman terms, if a kid scores 90 in CL, that's a very good effort because most of Singapore would score much lower. Whereas a 90 in Maths would not be as outstanding because the average for Maths is higher than that for CL. Therefore that CL 90 would be rewarded by a better T-score.

is it common for school to let the kids practice more with 情境作文 instead of 完成文章?
my gal told me, her school teacher, since P4, usually let them do 情境作文, and they have been encourage to do this for PSLE as well. so she is not really familiar with doing 完成文章
Hi dylanmummy2003,

Yes, it is possible that schools/teacher prefer focus more on a particular type of compo if that's the general directive the CL department is taking. It's similar to CL, where you will notice majority of the practices are on 看图作文 (still have to do a couple of 命题作文 for the sake of showing all exam-able components/questions are covered 😂 )

As mentioned earlier, the tendency of going out of point in 完成文章 is generally higher (when pit against 情境作文). I got asked the question about which type of questions to choose many times and my answer is 'need to 审题 and decide based on your level of understanding of the requirement and confidence of writing'.

For e.g. sometimes, the student might have read a model compo or came across compre passage that has similar setting to the 完成文章 question. In such cases, can't possibly ask him/her to 'die-die' choose 命题作文 over a question he/she has more confidence in.

Thus, if there's not enough time to practice writing full compo for HCL, then it is advisable to look through as many topics for both types of questions as possible and plot out the general story flow or brain storm on possible ideas.

Hi ay33, there are some guidebooks that explains how to 審题 but it's usually just mentioned over a couple of pages/lines. Indeed, practicing how to identify key words help - this is true for many Paper 2 sections too. Another tip is to keep probing by asking yourself questions using the 6何法 - aka 5W1H.

You can consider taking pictures of content pages of the various compo books and use those questions as 審题practices for your child. 😛

questions: why you remained in class, how were you feeling, what incident could have possibly been caused by you, when did the incident happen, who did it affect, why were you heading to the office with a heavy heart, why do you need to go and find the teacher etc.

Hi! Chen Laoshi, thank you so much for your help & guidance! 🙂

Bochapmum3, these are the compo and oral topics that I know of which were tested in this SA1 -->

- (警觉性,好公民) Boy saw a bag on MRT station platform, thought there might be a bomb in it
- (助人为乐)Boy (while on his way to have his meal) helped old man who fell down
- (警觉性,安全)Mother brought son to playground after having meal at fast food restaurant, while Mother was engrossed with her hand phone, stranger approached boy with toy car, boy disappeared from playground
- (说谎/诚实)Boy received call while doing work, lied to Mum he's going out to study with his friends (actually went to join them for soccer), Mum saw them playing while on her way to do grocery shopping
- (为别人着想,安全)Boy playing soccer with friends at park, on the way back home saw his friend & greeted each other, girl cycling at fast speed knocked into both of them, boy & friend got injured (hand injury + bleeding respectively) and onlookers start to gather

- 懂得为别人着想(in the library)
- 友谊 (friends being the best companion in studying and learning - how else can friends benefit/learn from each other besides studies)
- 帮忙做家务 (filial piety)
- 户外学习 (vs. classroom learning, pros and cons)
- 注意安全(playing at void deck and in neighbourhood)
- 学习新科技 (importance, advantage)
- 以礼待人 (manners and courtesy, esp. when paying visit at other's place and while hosting others)

Chen laoshi, thanks! The last one seems to be a relatively new topic? Others seem to have appear in Psle before.

The first 2 were from last year's PSLE - exactly the same video (some schools tweaked the question) - so I'd expect schools to be 'recycling' past years PSLE videos in Pri 5 / 6 SA oral exams in the future (esp. since these videos and questions are not included in the 3 years series - unlike picture conversation which were published in the past).

Referring to the https://chenlaoshi.wixsite.com/psleprepclass/scope-of-curriculum,

- 户外学习
- 学习新科技
- 以礼待人

are the 'new' ones

To share a website for PSLE T-score prediction. It is based on the current performance of the child and predict his/her PSLE T-score by using statistic model.
