    Is common type of cooking oil harmful?

      My view is that we might want to know all this for our kids (assuming they subscribe to these views, since they are already adults), but why bother for ourselves if we are already at retirement age? I am now 55, and I think the damage, if any, has already been done. I just try to eat reasonably healthily based on the general advice widely given, when it doesn’t cause me too much inconvenience or cost too much money. My view is that there is no point chasing up all the latest theories. If they stand the test of time, I will adapt, assuming I’m still around!


      Back to cooking oil - I suppose there are always risks in processed food. But there are probably also risks in non-processed food? This is one of the cases where I just buy what is generally recommended - eg. canola, sunflower, olive - as opposed to lard, and hope for the best. In any case, how "non-processed" can any oil be unless the oil is tapped from the plant and used directly?

          currently using olive canola oil for cooking..yesterday replenished one as there is a good promo going on at ntuc.


          I guess it is more on how much oil we put into our body and allowing our body to naturally 'process' it in order not to accumulate, is more important? I been buying lots of chips recently..telling myself I got to go moderate on it soon 😓

            Too much of a good thing is a bad thing.


            Coconut oil has a high level of saturated fat. Therefore, regular consumption of it is no good for health. Regular use of coconut oil raises total blood cholesterol levels and may promote weight gain. The same goes for cooking oil, using one type of cooking oil exclusively is bad. Ideally, you should try alternating between different types regularly.

            The word "processed" frightens people. There’s really nothing wrong with it as long as it’s done correctly. For canola oil, it’s generally acknowledged (but not 100% conclusive) that moderate intake can lower the risk of coronary heart disease.

                Agree with just using less oil in general.. Reading about health can be a scary thing since there are so many varying opinions and studies on what is good and what should be avoided. For me, even after understanding all the risks... the toughest part of eating and cooking healthy is the taste... 🤷

                  I did some research about coconut oil a few months ago as a good friend introduced. There are generally 2 schools of thought. Many health benefits were mentioned such as raise good cholesterol, weight management, improve gum related conditions, improve skin issue like Eczema, improve memory and even slow down Alzheimer condition in those articles. Most of these benefits are due the anti-inflammatory properties of this so called superfood made of mainly fatty acid of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) and lauric acid. The other school says it is saturated fat is not good for health.


                  But we brought a bottle and started trying, and still using today. My wife use it for gum pulling and it seems to work in reducing the gum inflammation within a few days. She also use on her skin as she has Eczema, it seems to help to smooth the skin and reduce dryness. We also started to use the oil in moderation in our diet, such as cooking, baking and even added a few drops to our coffee. heehee.

                  When I research on the best quality type of coconut oil, an article says that the hot extracted virgin coconut oil is better because the heating process gives it a higher antioxidant content. But it was difficult to find the HEVCO oil in Singapore. Mostly are cold pressed. Finally I found the oil of OriHealth brand. This is a Halal certificated and manufactured in our neighboring country, Malaysia. So I brought one from a U Stars supermarket outlet near my place. The oil meets my needs as it could be use for cooking, apply to skin and safe to consume directly. Honestly, the taste is better than I thought.

                  Anyone know of any other hevco brand oil? Please share if you do.

                      I used either coconut oil or sesame oil to cook. After reading up on commercial brands like sunflower oil, canola oil etc. are extremely bad for health - I stopped immediately and switched. You’d be surprised how tastier the dish is with different kind of oils.


                      I never looked back.
