If you are referring to next year registration, you have missed the PV application deadline which was on 31 May 2019.

No chance for PV now. PV can be any distance, but no guarantee to register if you stay too far.

If you are registering in 2020, PV for any schools will be too late.

As per Davischew comments, too late for PV. Same goes for clan or GRL route.

Unless you have some relevant religious ties, you are down to Phase 2A2 (alumni) or Phase 2C. -
Hello parents, I am currently within 1-2km of SJIJ. Based on my observation, it seems like for the previous years, <1km is a safe bet (pls correct me if i'm wrong!). Hence, I am pondering the option of securing a rental unit to boost my chances for SJIJ. Question: when do I have to execute this move (ie: timeline to reflect new address on NRIC bcos I understand that 30months starts from the day my son enrols into p1) and also whether it is a good move to even do so?
My other option would be to enrol under 2A1 for RMPS but I am hesitant due to the distance plus my husband's workplace is in Newton, so moving closer to Novena seems like a more feasible option.
Thank you so much for the advice.

Yes <1km is absolutely safe for SJIJ. Thus advisable to just move. If u don’t mind me saying, since your hubby’s workplace is in Newton, and your son will be at least 6 years in that area (and possibly +6 more years if he goes to SJI Secondary - it’s not far away from Novena!)...it makes more financial sense to buy instead of rent. If the price is right, that is.

Whether it’s a good move? Definitely. Your son will get more sleep, can walk to school, United Square & Goldhill Centre have all the enrichment classes you could want...there’s Novena Square nearby also for other shopping. I’m not a housing agent btw, just lived there for 3 years before.
The 30-month period starts from the date your son is enrolled into the school. Buffer a few weeks before that to change both your IC addresses. Technically it can be done within a day if you have the required paperwork (check up on that).
