Dunman High School (Junior High)
-
My DS was rejected so his option left NUS High WL or go in via PSLE score to other school.
Wonder why he can go through NUS high tough selection test but not IP school interview. Lol…scratching head. Maybe he is lacking in some stuff which the school is looking for.
Nevertheless he said he will decide if to exercise NUS high WL or give up his WL after PSLE. He was not taking the rejection too hard as from day 1 he was just aiming for NUS High. I am the one who asked him to put in 3 choices.
Base on his prelim 4 A star, i think he can go in any secondary school with his result if nothing drastic went wrong on actual day.
I think my hesitation to support his dream NUS high is affecting him abit. I just feel is better to have a more rounded main stream education which is more safer. Or am i wrong not to support him? -
Thanks Floppy. You are right, there are too many possibilities. I think I took it harder than my Son. I’m Glad that sonny is quite happy with the WL and his remark is that at least he is still on WL and he could work on his national exams. This is the only school that he applied for and he is sure of what he wants.

Just my five cents worth... I would support my son for what he wants to achieve if the decision is not a bad one. After all, in the next 6 years, it would be easier for them to persevere on, if they make the choice themselves. I’m sure the next 6 years would not be easy for them. There will be challenges and if the decision is not theirs in the first place, it would be easy for them to give up and admit defeat. Personally, NUSH was my first choice, but we didn’t try for it as he is not keen at all.

after PSLE is over, after the last paper on 2 October 2019, see how your son perform first ?
on DSA exercise option dateline due, if still cannot decide whether or not to accept NUS High WL offer, can wait for PSLE results released announcement date, around 23 November ?
NUS High offer Supplementary intake (November) ?
once actual PSLE Tscore come out in Nov, your son can choose
- Dunman High (IP), assuming he can meet DHS Cut-off-point, since he had done pretty well in his Prelim 2019 with 4 A *, congratulations to your son
- or any other IP school (be it dual track or single track IP),
- or OP school, or
- can still apply back to NUS High, if he is still keen, this time under Supplementary intake, where he gain freedom at long last, better still, because No longer bound by NUSH DSA contract signed MOE Terms and condition, anymore
maybe once you know his actual PSLE Tscore, you'll be in a better position then, to re-assess one more time the situation, make a more accurate final decision correctly, wisely ? By then, if his heart-beat still slant towards NUS High, can still try to enter via Supplementary intake
if during Supplementary NUSH interview, P (NUSH) ask you, \"how come u didn't take up my DSA WL offer back then, now come back via Supp intake ?\" Just apologize, speak the truth. Tell P the truth that u are in a dilemma, couldn't make up your mind back then. They will understand -

What is considered 'safer'?

A more rounded main stream education but couldn't offer you many options for Poly / JC because of COP, is that safer?
Or, a more rounded main stream education but resulting in some knowledge here, some knowledge there and nothing that you are really interested in, is that safer?
NUSH works best for students who understand their strengths and interests. From what has been shared so far, seems to me that the son is very clear about his interests / what he wants but the parents are the ones who are still in the dark or refusing to accept the reality
IMHO, go with the child's decision. He is the one going to school for the next 6 years, not the parents.
In any case, he can only go with the WL and hope that it converts to CO. It's pretty much out of anyone but the school's hands. -
Yes, its the parents who are hesitating. If we are not, the DS will have an easier decision making process.

While I can empathize with what you are going through, I think we need to understand: you won't be going to school nor will you be sitting for exams for the next 6 years.

Wow, Prelims 4A* think he has a good chance to go RI/HCI.

DD2 had this classmate who was a Maths Masterclass student, wanted to go NUSH badly. Her parents only wanted RGS and she was not even allowed to try the NUSH DSA! The girl subsequently scored 4A*. Now in RGS, I do not think she has been shortchanged by her parents’ insistence.
But to be honest, to give up the WL and wait for tscore will need lots of courage (at least for me) cos nobody can tell for sure what the 3 digits will turn out to be. -

Your son is keen to go NUS high passionately, but as a parent, something is holding u back.

What is this fear giant, inside you that u are battling, struggling?
Has it got to do with languages ?
Or u feel that at 12 years old, he still not mature, too young for him to specialize so early, go into NUS High heavy on Maths and Science stuff, won't end up in Law faculty, that kind of situation ? -
I am wondering if it’s too young for him to specialise as what he like now might not be what he like in the future. Can we trust a 12 yr old kid to make such a big decision?
Also, what if he cannot cope in this so called gifted environment where many are platinum or gold medal in various olympiad.
Maybe it’s us parents who are worrying too much.
