Honestly I find the teachers at NYGH extremely caring and \"parental like\". They provide a lot of extra help to make sure everyone can do well. Help comes in many forms, notes, revision worksheets, extra classes and even nagging at the students to book one-on-one consultation with them. So I feel that as long as the child is willing, she will be able to do well.
Thank you Imp75, Swc, comfy and lego for your very helpful replies.
Sounds like the school does support the kids well and that is so comforting. It's not just the practical side of saving tuition money, it's also the relief that one can entrust the child to the school. Especially as I read that the secondary school hours are long. Means I will only see her a little in the morning and a few hours in the evening before sleep.
For me, I have no expectation. For CL (or for any subject actually), can run with the middle of the pack is good enough already. So I'm leaning towards dropping the Chinese tuition. Let her go in there and find her way first. Very most can't get back the same tutor, then will have to hunt around for another one. -

Hahaha not all KSP parents, my 3 gals in nygh have no tuition...
personally i would prefer letting the child get as much \"free\" time as possible becos sec sch already takes up so much of her time....tuition comes in only when she starts failing the subject....but tat's juz my own approach, i understand KSPs of cos tend to be more KScutepandabear\" post_id=\"1933722\" time=\"1567645079\" user_id=\"150031:

Personally I felt that no tuitions for my dd since Sec 1 @ NYGH works better for her. Like most parents, initially I felt super insecure for my dd’s academic if there is no tuition for her. It was a "brave" decision to let it go without tuition since last year, due to her intensive CCA and other school programmes during weekdays. Hence weekend are reserved to finish out all homeworks, graded and non-graded assignments, revisions etc. She still have some time to relax whereby she spent her time watch her animate shows. Miraclously, her MSG was 1.00 and she received Top in one of the humanities subject & NYGH Scholarship Award last year. Dd used school’s notes, past year exam papers for revision, and will fix consultation with teachers for clarifications. This a-la-çarte consultation seems more efficient and productive than regular tutions. My dd likes no tuition for her in compared when she was in primary school. (Ps. In fact she did not grow-up. She just hates tuitions) In restrospect, no tuitions for her also means saving alot of money for our family.

talking about CCAs in nygh, is it possible for a new sec one student to go for music-related or sports-related CCAs with ZERO pri sch relevant experience?

if your daughter had played guzheng on her own privately outside, but didn't join her primary school's guzheng team, they will audition and test her guzheng standard. The same apply to Western string instrument.
for Sports
if your daughter had joined AG gymnastics outside, learn on her own, but never join any primary school's gymnastic team before, she can attend a Sports trial on AG after come on board Sec 1. The coach will assess her -

Around January or February , all Sec 1's who did not DSA in through sports/ performance arts will have to go through auditions and sports trials to choose a CCA. There are 6 choices to fill in on the form.

Depending on the number of available places in the team & how good the applicants are, all the students will be allocated a CCA; they can be allocated to a performing CCA, club, sports team, uniformed group.
Specific to your question, yes - it is possible but also depends on how many want that CCA, how many slots they have left, what level of achievements the team has zonally/ nationally... eg. if the sports team is nationally ranked, then the chances of getting in with zero experience is slim since they would have taken in DSA players plus there may be others who have played the sport before. -
hello all! hope you all will enjoy the upcoming holidays with your family and friends!
just would like to ask two questions:
1. what is the estimated cohort size for nygh?
and
2. what are the volleyball and or debate cca trials like? as in, what activities are students required to do, is it difficult etc. (this question is a bit more specific so many thanks if you answer it!)
thank you in advance! -

Can provide some info re Debate trial. First round group debate. Girls are grouped into groups of 6 to 8 and will debate on given topic. Selected candidates will be asked to go for round 2. Each girl has to debate against herself in front of a panel of 4 to 5. On the spot the girl will be given a motion, she can choose to present her views as either pro or OP. After that, she will be asked to present the opposite views. Finally followed by some Q&A. Final selection of girls is about 8.
