@MP. Ooh, ' took HI? A lot of reading up bah? Mine no interests in HI, plus not that hardworking, so GE seems comparatively much much more manageable. Indeed, Science subjects probably easier to get external coaching hor. Jiayou!

Yes, Mks, at least with regards to MP's and my posts. So when deciding a post Psle school, may be good to consider the upper Secondary subject combinations available as well.

Most JCs will allow students who did not read Biology in Sec 3 and 4, to read Biology at Year 5, I thought?

HCI made it clear to us that Sec 3 and 4 Biology is not a prerequisite.

              No
majority of our Junior Colleges in Singapore, do require Sec (3 and 4) Biology as a pre-requisite, and scored at least a B3

              (1)

EJC don't allow students without any basic, fundamental Sec (3 nor 4) Bio background, to jump straight direct into H2 A-level Biology, especially when there is a big difference in curriculum scope, between O level vs. A-level Bio content

              (2)

other Junior colleges like Temasek JC, also function the same way as EJC
students must have taken Sec (3 and 4) Bio before, scored at least a B3

              https://www.temasekjc.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u550/Academic/JC%20Programme/JC1%20Subject%20Combination%20and%20Prerequisites%20%282019%29.pdf

              (turn to page 6)

              (3)

National Junior College, also imposed minimum B3

              https://nationaljc.moe.edu.sg/curriculum/senior-high/subject-combinations/

              (4)

              Dunman High too, said -

At higher and more advanced levels, the study of Biology is built on the content knowledge
gained from the O-Level syllabus. Thus a foundational course in O-Level Biology is compulsory
for students intending to take up H2 Biology. To offer H2 Biology, students should possess a
good knowledge and understanding of Biology at O-Level.

              (turn to page 38)

              (5)

St Andrew Junior College too, said -

B3 or better in Pure Biology at GCE O level, or

A1 in Combined Science (with Biology) at GCE O level

              https://standrewsjc.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u674/Publications/Prospectus/SAJC_Prospectus_2015_1.pdf.pdf

              (turn to page 9)

Thanks for the info, phttp. I guess HCI (JC Section) must be quite unique in this regard. The prerequisite to read Bio at Year 5 and 6 is a B3 in Chem.

This was eeyons ago and irrelevant now - I did Bio in JC even though I did not read it in Sec 3 and 4. (About 6 or 7 of my JC classmates did not study O level Bio then). However I dropped it after 3 months as under the old system, we could change during the '2nd intake'.

                  My DD1’s school is weird.
Eng Literature is compulsory and DD1 must take up a 2nd Humans subject (either His or Geo).

                  So it’s either
                  Combi A: 2 Sc + 2 Humans or
                  Combi B: 3 Sc + 2Humans

According to DD1, she said her teacher has hinted the school prefers students to take 2Sc + 2Humans regardless of how high one’s result is.

My DD1 is worried if Yr3/Yr4 she does not hit 65% and above, she will only do Sc at H1 level and she will be finished!

One kind fourmer has PM me that my daughter will not be able to switch from Physics to Bio say at Yr4 if she’s doing badly at it. So I guess, our decision we make, would be a irreversible one.

Combi B would be 9 subjects? And if 3rd Lang, becomes 10?

I hope I don’t add to the confusion but if do Combi B, can you at the end of sec 3, after looking at the results of all 3 sciences, voluntarily disregard one Sc subject and as long as the other 2 hit 65%, then she can continue with the other 2 at H2? Cannot be that they expect all 3 to hit 65% in order to do 2 at H2 right?

Sec 3, sec 4 allocation is not 50-50 or do they expect min 65% sec 3 and min 65% sec 4?

Am I making sense? Ignore if not making sense.

Yes, if take combi B, that would be 9 subjects (excluding 3rd Lang / BSP etc).

DD1 told me she if she chooses to do triple Sc and decides to drop any one later on, teacher said she would be sent for counselling and that doesn’t mean they allow her to quit.

Regarding the voluntarily disregarding of the weakest one in Yr3/Yr4, guess it will affect her overall results? DD1 said if overall average falls below 65%, teachers will start to call parents. Sec 1 term 1, I received one such call before, damn scary. Lol. Overall less than 65% or 60%, then girl will not be able to be promoted and will be retained for a year.

My DD1 said her school doesn’t allow triple humanities subjects. So she must pick either His or Geo + compulsory Eng Lit because her school believes in literature.

That time you mentioned Geo at higher sec level, result can plunge, kind of scare me. Thinking through, for Geo, maybe doing well in lower sec, doesn’t mean can score when comes upper sec cos they cover different things.

DD1 cannot decides on either one as she loves both. My hubby decides on her behalf that she should go for History. History is safer for her then, plus my DH is a history fanatic, easier for him to teach her.

Got curious as there never was a

pre-requisite all along and checked with my friend’s son in Sec 4 DHS now. Turn out I am correct. Current batch of Sec 4 IP students can still take H2 biology next year even if they did not take Biology in Sec 3 or Sec 4. Looks like the pre-requisite is only for the new JAE students as the document is dated January 2019. My guess is the school still need some form of results to gauge the ability to do H2 Biology and in this case O Level Biology results would be the best gauge. Also, it could be because there are some pull down topics from A Levels syllabus in maths and science in Sec 3 and 4 IP syllabus already so it would be relatively ‘easier’ for current IP students to cope with H2 biology. I did not ask for the list of pulled down topics though. Not sure if there would be any changes to the pre-requisite requirement for next year though.

Since you confirmed that your friend's son at current IP4 now (2019) @Dunman High (IP) function in the same identical way as Hwa Chong (IP) students,

ie. allow Year 5 IP students to take on H2 Biology inspite having not taken Bio at (IP3 nor IP4) before,

And the main reason provided why this was allowed was ,

\" because @Sec 3 and 4 : certain A-level topics were being pulled down and taught already in IP \" -

                        anyone can clarify or confirm,
does the same situation happen (apply) to five other IP A-level (JCs / High schools) as well, ie.

To IP4 students for H2 (Physics and Bio) at

                        River Valley High,
                        RI,

                        National Junior College,
                        Temasek Junior College
                        Victoria Junior College ?

                        Or

do these named five IP JCs, also follow JAE strict rule of admission (subject combination selection), which Eunoia Junior College (amongst IP JCs) is already following JAE style ?
