The practice in SG for ALL foreign domestic helpers under MOM is employers let the helper go for home leave after each contract. If she agrees to take cash in lieu of her airfare then get it in writing.

There are indeed some employers (not just expat employers) who wld go on holidays yearly and rather buy them air-tic to let the maid take extra home leave. Hence, pino maids compare notes & try ‘demand’ for it. I had a friend whose helper gets that ‘extra’ and told my ex-pino helper. Since then, it changed her attitude & I choose to send her home immediately after she showed no changes when I counseled her. This is so I don’t pass the problem to others.

        Hi Esteema,

        May I ask the following:-

        a) did your ex-pinoy maid completed her 2 years contract and asked for yearly paid home leave or before completing her 2 years contract ?

        b) how long did you counsel her ? didn’t you afraid that she will harm your family members ?

        c) did you give her advance notice or sacked her and sent her home without prior notice ?

the reason I am asking (a) and (b) because my current maid is taking care of my bedridden mum and I am afraid that if I counsel her and give her advance notice, she will harm my mum. Daytime I am working, no CCTV at home and I have no siblings to watch over the current maid.

As such, am seeking advise from all of you who have dealt with maids before.

        Appreciate all the advise. Thanks.

The helper told us that there is this website (where she got to know from other helpers during her off days) that they can use to it to find new employers without going through agents. She is confident of getting a new angmo employer who is willing to pay her at least $1K easily. She even thinks she is underpaid now.

This helper is from Indonesia and she only wants to work for angmo as she said she doesn’t need to cook most days (they usually eat salad), if steaks then just throw inside oven and only need bathe the kid like 2-3 times a week as their parents don’t really care. :rotflmao:

no wonder filipino maids like to work for angmohs.
angmohs eat a lot of salad, microwave food and let the maids handle the entire household. I've seen filipino maids at cold storage putting several strawberries in her mouth while checking out at the cashier. then they take taxi back.
Chinese employers would eat stir-fry dishes which require cleaning up. that's because we don't have expat package.

While the intention of giving maids a weekly day off is good, but it has created a lot of other problems for the employers.

When maids come together, they will compare who has a higher salary, which website to go so that they can find themselves another employer w/o going thru agents, better to work for angmo employers (get to go back kampung for hol on yearly basis), get into boyfriend problems, borrow money from money lenders etc.

think safer to install a CCTV at home, in case maid ill-treat your bed-ridden mom

it is too late to install CCTV now as current maid is with us for 2 years. she will know we are keeping an eye on her. actually, we didnt install initially as in 2017 we urgently got her to come and worked for us as mum was discharged from hospital and no one to take care of her and I have exhausted all my leave then.

My helper is aware we hv cctv. She said she is ok. I think as Long as one is doing the right thing, why concern of the cctv. The cctv is in living room and dad!'s bedroom.

She asked when her contract was just abt to end. We stated our std practice but gave no other comments as we noted her reaction.

Not everyone wld do what I do coz it’s gonna sound very drama.

My family discussed in private and we decided swiftly not to wait out for her to complete till her last day as we were concern for our very young kids then. That very day, we booked online same day flight and arranged for MIL to watch over kids, whilst we get FDW to pack 3 hours before flight (no prior announcement) so as to reduce chances of her doing anything rash.

DH and i wld announce that we’re going out and I will tell her to clear her bladder first. Then he will tell her to pack as we wld like her to go back since her contract ends soon & family will be away. I wld close the door to kitchen and standby. Always let the man of house give such instructions to maids as most will give respect to men and not try resist or do funny actions. Pack her str to airport ensuring at least one driving the car with ano accompany in case maid tries to distract driver. Owise just take a cab. In fact, it was good thing we were decisive & sent her off w/o hesitation coz when I was checking thot her things at the airport, I discovered she stole DH’s ferragamo necktie I gifted him but she claimed she didn’t know know how it ended up in her luggage. Haiz!

I learnt to do this after my own previous bad experience many years back when I was single and had a pino maid caring for my bedridden mum. It happened after she argued over the curfew time for her return as she was too bold in retort that “You shld not dictate what time I return since u do not pay for my Sunday offday”. That was her 1st Sunday out and she didn’t reach home after 9pm whilst I was worried sick thinking she lost her way and thot I set a time for her to return by 6pm (back then in 1990s).

In addition, I read a Straits Times reported case of a maid locking herself in the toilet after the eyer told her they’ll send her back. That case the maid stalled for hours even after the police was called in. Police can’t do anything once the maid lock herself in a bathroom.

Just sharing. I’ve since learnt always to be decisive, swift and not windy washy. I don’t worry abt unpaid maid loans coz the safety of my family is of utmost importance, nor do i wish to pass on problematic maids to other families so my conscience will not bug me, once I lost trust.

For me, it’s best done for them to learn that it’s for them to return hometown to think thro and learn to take eyers’ instructions and not be demanding nor take advantage of SG eyers. They can always apply for ano job with ano h’hold if they’re really in need of work & hopefully they learn not to jeopardize the next valuable job when they’ve to pay agents to find and earn a decent living. A recent young girl I helped bring in was earning equivalent of S$80 pm teaching whilst in SG, her min wld be S$550, which is very attractive for her and as eyers, I feel we’ve to always take reference to their context and not ‘spoil’ or ‘train’ their expectations to a ‘greed’ level. Anyway, I’ve long given up hiring pino girls. It’s just my personal experience, maybe others hv it better.

                      MOM doesn't protect employers.

it's ridiculous maids are allowed to keep their passports :slapshead: when they are allowed to hold their passports, they can buy a ticket and escape to batam. what in the world is wrong with MOM?

                        Hi Esteema,

Thanks for the detailed sharing of how you deal with the ex-pinoy maid a swift manner. my current pinoy maid have completed her 2 years contract and repaid all her loan. Her intention to work here is to support her daughter to university and complete her studies in 2023. but during a casual chat last week, she said she is entitled to yearly paid home leave as told by the agent. I said the agent have explained to me that Philippines law for yearly paid leave to maids is not applicable to SG. They are ONLY entitled to paid home leave upon completion of EACH 2 years contract. Immediately, her face turned black and answered back at me - SIR, IT’S OK THEN YOU CAN START LOOKING FOR A NEW MAID. I felt very threatened by her remarks but didn’t argue with her.

                        a) if maid have already worked for 2 years and fully paid their loans, can we return her to agent to let other employers hire her ?

If (a) is applicable, then I might adopt the approach so as to allow her to be hired by others to support her daughter to finish studies instead of sending her back and terminate the future of a youth by depriving them of a good education to seek a better life. I have a soft heart. hahaha…
