we encourage our DD to go for 3rd language, becos she is naturally interested in languages n it's a good opportunity to get out of school n make more frens. The utility aspect of the 3rd language is a secondary consideration but who knows if it will be important later in life. I do know of a fren who is now heading a French company's regional office becos he took French at O and A levels.

Er....why would anyone want to study a 3rd language? My DD1 in Cedar sec 3 IP tells me all her peers who took 3rd language regretted. Maciam jiak bah bo sai bang. Already so busy. Got free time, might as well go have a life...
The kid is now a young adult and working in Singapore, but with a focus on Japan and travels there once a month on business - simply because of the ability to converse in Chinese, Japanese and English.
So, yeh, that is ONE answer to your \"why\"? -

Ah. Personal interest. When one has an inclination. Good point. As our kids grow, they discover a life. Mine likes painted nails and instagram more than a 3rd language. Guess I overlooked it. Thanks!
