Talking Point (toggle) report that 2019 Psle Maths is tough.
One parent shared, told reporter (interviewer) that the tough questions come out from Secondary 1 syllabus.

This part, what do u all think, 2019 P6 students who have just sat for Psle, this year?

                https://video.toggle.sg/en/series/talking-point-2019-2020/ep32/872375

                After watching Talking Point,
                I feel that
the interviewer ought to have also included interviewed the most important stakeholders (SEAB & MOE), not just interviewed merely

                - 2019 (P6 students, parents),
                - tuition centre, \"PSLE Maths\"

In other words, widen (broaden) your boundary (scope) of interviewees.

                Another feedback is
why interview only focus on Maths only ?
Why didn't mention or talk about Science and languages (English, Mother Tongue) ?
After all, PSLE test All 4 subjects, not just Maths 1 single subject only, right ?

inside (Science, English, Mother Tongue) ... there are also 2019 PSLE students who struggled, fared poorly.
These can be silent (quiet) ... 2019 killer papers too

The interviewer ought Not just focus on Maths subject alone, but also preferably have included interviewing SEAB, on how they marked this year 2019 PSLE Science, Section B OEQ (open ended) questions. This will be interesting, as well as benefit next year's 2020 PSLE batch of students, in their Science

I know some interviewees feel that the paper is tough, but to say hard questions come out of Sec 1 syllabus is really exaggerating.

SEAB / MOE is part of the civil service. They can’t suka suka answer media enquiry. The standard press release and templated answers are probably not interesting enough for TV.

As for marking scheme, you don’t need SEAB to answer as you already have the answer: it’s called “refer to teacher” (but of course, there are people who don’t trust the teacher 🤷 )

Think some ppl miss the point of this programme.

Firstly, it is to address the recent ‘alarm’ abt the difficulty level of THIS year’s PSLE Math paper when many parents claimed it is way beyond P6 syllabus. Hv not heard big hoo-ha abt this year’s PSLE Sc.

Also, in the interest of time, one focus problem is addressed thro maximizing a tuition centre coach (who is a mother herself) testifying how Spore Math has gained recognition worldwide incl the US & Australia and our Spore kids can ace any uni entry application tests as her kids had done. Just to add, some International Schools in Spore are using Spore Math textbooks in their curriculum.

As to MOE/SEAB spokesman, as floppy had pointed out the sensitivity of being interviewed adhoc, I believe Dr Yeoh is sufficient to rep analysis & how Spore Math syllabi’s is being taught & examined. The point is topics & taught & tested (nothing tested outside); the Math qns we’re testing for application of concept learnt not regurgitate some math exercises during classroom/tuition and if unfamiliar than kids cannot analyse the Qn for what it is asking; finally Spore Math has evolved over the years to develop kids to apply & not route memorizing formulae and fitting in the numbers provided in the Qns. I believe Dr Yeoh was part of educating/training MOE teachers on teaching math concepts & I’ve attended one of his session. Teach kids to ustand topic & concepts & use diff math tools to apply to any problems they’ll be thrown with & not recognize only familiar qns and complete math test.

If parents expect their children just to practice math Qn after Qn and hope they’ve prepared the child well w/o knowing if the child u’stand’g the concepts & how to apply them to any Qn related to the topics taught, then that’s not learning in the sense to prepare them to solve new & emerging problems in the future they may encounter in society which does not look like any familiar solution they can plug in immediately but will require their trained ingenious mind to solve. JMO.

Hi parents! Our children are the first batch taking New Syllabus Chinese. Do you think past years TOP school papers are still relevant to practice for PSLE?

A lot of my DS friends went for TLL. Much smaller classes, some may say higher quality materials and teaching (subjective) as compared to the latter. All of them scored above 260++. Best you go down and flip thru material or better still attend a trial class.
