After a long wait for PSLE results, it's another 3 weeks of anxious waiting again... 😓

Any suggestions on how to make time go faster? 😆

Mine was initially adamant not to apply for DSA. In the end, we secretly applied and she was selected for the initial assessment with a very popular school. Showed black face and simply ‘no heart’ to even attend. She kept saying it’s ‘back door’ way....not keen etc etc.

TLDR: she did similarly rather ok/well for the actual. *Phew*
DSA is never a ‘back door’ but perhaps a ‘Main Door’ in the coming years. The world is looking for Talents and Character, not academic excellence, MOE realised that to quickly refocus education efforts to identify talents at a young age, scrap Tscore, groom and nurture future Ronaldo, JJ Lin, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates etc.

        Main Door - DSA
Side Door - Unidentified Talents (Join Main Cohort with Tscore/AL)
        Back Door - Appeals/Donations

          Not bad, your analogy.

My analogy: DSA is like priority entry (in terms of timing). Those CO kids get to enter first. Then WL kids.

T score kids usual entry timing. Must wait for posting results.

Appeal kids are the last batch to enter.

Yes. And this is why DSA takes precedence before PSLE because it is the most important.

And not forgetting 4 specialised schools SOTA, NUS High, Sports School, SST can enter only by DSA.

Personally DSA helps in promoting social mixing and de-emphasing academic excellence, somewhat as a result of our culture of meritocracy.

Depend, from which angle u look at

                1) if consider, by mass Volume of traffic, entering into Secondary schools

Main door (majority) : by PSLE Tscore, or by AL points

Side door (smaller number) : by DSA (CO and Wait-list successfully converted)

                Back door : by Appeal

                2) if consider, by timing of entry

Main door (Round 1, earlier batch ) :
by DSA (CO + Wait-list successfully converted ones), BEFORE sitting for Psle timing

Main door (Round 2, later batch ) :
by Tscore / AL points, AFTER sat for Psle timing

                No side door, because
                side door too small (narrow).
The side door will gate crash, break down, because unable to accommodate the sheer enormous force of the huge majority (the bulk) pouring in through S1 posting by computer, who still entered by Tscore / AL,

                Back door :
by Appeal, those were way below the school's Cut off point in the past, BEFORE Moe intervened : no appeal allowed, unless meet COP

donation $ (to build air-con library, swimming pool for Cca like swimming, water polo, water ballet synchronized , new additional school facilities, air-con hall for students to take National exam, air-con classroom) :
                not accepted

Seriously.... those who can afford to send kids to enrichment classes and trainings early and consistently will have a definite advantage in DSA. Only 1-2 schools I know do not look at past achievements for DSA, especially sports, performance arts, music, etc. My own stand is that DSA is not a social mixer/leveler, though it does give opportunities to those who are not overall academic excellent.

                    MommyNg is right

The poor children, from low income families, are often disadvantaged

At kindergarten age as young as starting 4 year old onwards, parents with $ in their pocket, start training their kindergarten kids to

Play golf, (as an example), or

acquire different kind of skill, have an advantage (headstart) early, to prepare them for DSA.

                    After training 3 years (N2, K1, K2, ie. 4 to 6 years old),
By the time these \"advantaged\" kids entered P1, some \"prestigious\" primary schools have already identified, pre-select which 7 yo kids, amongst their peer of P1s, to represent their Junior school team (competition ) in
Artistic gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, plus other kind of Sports CCA

Only certain type of Sports CCA are fair, in that after enter P1, then everyone on common equal ground, have a fair chance to be selected to play.

                    Eg

                    Basketball, volleyball, softball

I believe it’s meant for social mixing. But there are loopholes That were exploited in terms of well to do family preparing their kids to do well in sports and aesthetics as well as zealous school leaders playing around with their choices of dsa slots and selection criteria.

                        Must share this abt DSA.

In one year, we know of 2 kids competing for one precious spot in golf - one child fr neighborhood sch (HDB heartlander But parents willing to build the child up) & other fr popular sch (parents bring to JB for weekly golf practices. The kid fr Popular sch was hopeful, but in the end, the boy fr neighborhood sch clinch the DSA spot. Fair play based purely on talent & skill.
