To add on, for those very big groups with many members, usually they won’t ask the new Sec 1 recruits to take part (not skilled enough yet)…and also those Sec 4 taking O levels usually don’t take part.

for students who are taking HCL, whether from IP or from OP,

Under MOE policy, a student cannot take both O level CL and HCL in the same year .

all HCL students take O level CL in Sec3 and O level HCL in Sec4, in all Secondary schools.

Our piggy batch born 2007, will thus

          - take Standard CL O-level paper first in Sec 3, Year 2022 and

          - then take HCL O-level paper in Sec 4, Year 2023

Er ....not all actually...nowadays in some schools, no need to take the Sec 3 O levels CL paper anymore. Just need to take the HCL O level paper in Sec 4 will do. For example, DHS, NYGH and RGS. I think SCGS too ( not sure)?

This way is more risky, because if just go direct, only sit for one HCL O level paper in Sec 4 and don't do well, one does not have a second chance anymore to retake CL in Sec 4.

In contrast, St Nick, also another SAP school, is cautious. If students do not do well in their 1st attempt at CL O-level paper in Y3, at least they still have another 2nd attempt to resit the following year, Y4

out of the 3 schools u mentioned, DHS and NYGH are SAP schools, probably the schools assume that her students will do well in HCL O level paper in Y4, at one sitting. But is only an assumption

However, RGS is Not a SAP school and there are some pupils inside, who never sat for any 201nine PSLE HCL paper. Not all students inside RGS are strong in Chinese

I think it is a school policy / arrangement unfortunately, not something that the HCL students can choose. I asked if we can retake the HCL O level paper again in JC1 if we are unhappy with the grade, and the common answer is ‘possible but not encouraged as we prefer you to focus on your 4 H2 subjects instead’. Forgot to ask further whether we have to sit through chinese lessons in jc1 again before we are allowed to retake, or no need. If I am not wrong, the schools view that the CL O level paper at Sec 3 is not that important for ip students as compared to HCL O level paper as HCL score is needed for Uni admission score computation.

It’s not a case of SAP / non-SAP. These are pure-IP schools where students will proceed to Y5 and Y6. If they don’t clear HCL at O Level, they can just take the usual H1 CL paper.

I heard of comments that the CL at JC level is actually easier (or rather more manageable) than HCL at sec 4. Really the case?

Yup, likely, ours (IP) does Not allow OLevel HMT retake (unless fail, iirc); & mine (Year5) is confident that he does not need to consider his H1 MT for grade computation, so he just aims to pass... Sec MT is very much more manageable than Sec HMT (jmo)...
