These could be the reasons for the panic-buy:

      1. Monkey see HK snatch, monkey copy snatch.

We saw what HK pp snatched 2 days ago, being of the same kiasu/kiasi species, we must follow their shopping list too!

Gullible HK pp were misled by a fake news suggesting food supplies from mainland were gonna be cut off after Carrie Lam closed 10 out of 13 checkpoints (pressured by medical workers strike). But they didn't pay attention to her that freight & logistics won't be affected, and cross-border truck drivers driving the essential supplies from mainland are exempted from the LOA requirements! They also didn't read that Vinda (a major HK toilet ppr mfgr) and totally forgot that pulp/sanitary mfgrs were on their annual 14 day CNY leave and production was shut down. Assembly lines will restart after Yuan Xiao. Neither do they remember that HK's airport cargo is not shut down, so airflown imports like rice from main source countries--Vietnam and Thailand won't be cut off! :slapshead:

      2. Some older Singaporeans might have equated DORSCON Orange alert with the old 2003 SARS period Orange alert (not equivalent to DORSCON which was created after SARS) when schools were closed for 10 days. Maybe they thought their kids will soon need to spend 10 days at home to eat and poopee.

      3. Some thought DORSCON ORANGE is = DEFCON 3.

      4. It's not so much due to the leakage of MOH press release that's sparked off the panic-buy. In fact, go ask your husbands, those working had already been alerted on 5-7 Feb or earlier by their employers (who were in turn alerted by their governing bodies or MOM) to put up a BCP- telecommuting, alternate day roster, split team arrangement, etc. So that means you have to take turns to work from home and thus need an extra ricebowl and more toilet paper, rice, etc. He who used to poopee in office now has to poopee at home.

      5. They heard from MOH that 2 patients have been transferred to ICU (meaning it could be lethal as there's no vaccine right now) and that there are 4 new cases with no direct connection to the earlier clusters nor travel history to China, so pp start to worry about community spread. Therefore, they want to minimise risks and get all their vulnerable family members to stay home and dine as much as possible. This means they need to stock up on milk powder, adult diapers, baby diapers, rice, toilet paper, low GI-rice for the diabetic elderly, etc.

      6. Some of the panic-buyers forgot our borders are not shut, and we have a national stockpile. I'm surprised the husbands who had served NS before didn't tell their wives don't panic-buy. Singapore is ultra well-prepared and well-stocked with essentials.

      (PLS DO NOT REPUBLISH IMAGE)

      7. Some 30k PRC WP workers are heading back these few days in batches and will be placed on LOA, so their PRC friends, colleagues and employers here are helping them to stock up.

      8. They believe it's better to stock up in case they themselves are put on LOA out of the blue, after unfortunately coming into contact with a confirmed case in the coming weeks.

      9. For those who still cannot get enough masks and hand sanitizers, so they reckon they might as well stay at home to cook, rather than dine out to lower their risks.

      10. They worry our imports will be cut off when we eventually become a breeding hotbed for this virus. Don't think that will happen because WHO will step in when there's discrimination and stigma. Our food security strategy is a multi-prong one that includes import diversification, self-production, national stockpiles, overseas farming, local farming and G2G agreements, ASEAN Econ Community (AEC) food security agreements, etc.
Since the BCP advisory was already known on 5th, then why wasn’t there frenzy buying earlier? The transfer of 2 of the confirmed patients was similarly known earlier.

So what exactly was the trigger that caused the frenzy buying??

In my view, it’s the escalation to DORSCON Orange without an effective public communication strategy to assure the public. The viral “leaks” could have also contributed to the panic.

And whether there is any leak of info (which could be a case of OSA), let the authorities investigate, not up you or me to say so lah.

As for our strategic food stockpile, it’s meant for national emergencies (e.g. war), the kind NS was started for. So cannot touch it easily.

        ...
        Bingo.

What’s DORSCON Orange? Oh... a Level below red. Is red an extinction level event?

All this colour coding is great and useful for those in the know. However, people who are not in the know, meaning the general public need to have a better appreciation or understanding. Otherwise, everyone interprets it their way and sooner or later, some fellow will panic and then the whole mass hysteria will start.

Totally agreed With YL bec they probably didn’t anticipate such a reaction of public for Orange

Yes, it was a matter of time before upgrading to Orange and plans were in place beforehand but these were just for office.
Yo be honest, colleagues and I were still apprehensive after Orange was formally announced; lots of confusions etc.

Did we ever enter Red in the previous years?

I could rem SARS but Dorscon was not introduced yet. It was during H1N1 that we entered into Orange. This means we hv yet to experience Red!

When Orange was activated then, there was no frenzy. It’s clear this frenzy was imported as we hv many HongKongers & PRCs amongst us who had relatives locked-down & worried abt food shortages across HK/Shenzhen.

Alr mentioned DH’s colleagues hv been asked to buy masks & send over to relatives in HK & PRC. MIL asks us why she see many ppl buy till NTUC shelves empty & whether others know sth she didn’t know or shld she buy & stock up quickly. We had to tell her but only if she needs. Don’t need to follow blindly. She agrees no need.

Whether govt is at fault not able to pre-empt buying frenzy, so long as we exercise calm, cooperate by not adding to the foreign import of chaos, then we will survive. We shld be be united & be confident we’ve survive as SARS came & gone, H5N1 gone, a d we will fight this together. Keep ourselves hygienic & wash wash wash, wear masks only when ill, stay away fr crowded gatherings (like long supermkt queues 😉 ). We shld be caring & socially responsible, then will not add to burden of govt, medical staff or NTUC supermkt staff having to work frantically to reduce inconvenience of those who need their usual daily necessities w/o tiredsome long Qs.

In my case, I think the fear started when I couldn’t buy masks. And the government’s advice not to wear mask when we are not sick is very clear to me is a brain washing. I can control my own actions but I cannot control other people’s actions. I cannot depend on them to wear masks. We have heard stories in this KSP forum where people coughs without wearing masks.

Up until now, I cannot buy any masks or hand sanitizer here. Whatever masks I have, I just have to prolong the life although the advice is to through it away after each time use. I just sun it. No choice.

I don’t know why all those smart people in the world can’t invent masks that can be home made. Then just make everybody wears it. I wonder why there are 33 infected people in Singapore while there are only 25 infected people in Hong Kong. And clearly there are many more PRC there than here. Is it because most of them there wear masks? I wonder…

Yes, this point #8 is valid,
because once someone unfortunate in the household hit \"virus\" jackpot, infected

                        i) hospital will send patient into medical isolation ward rightaway,

ii) those family members inside the household, also will be scutinized one by one in detail,
because they live in the same house as the infected patient, hence no more time to go out buy grocery.
That's why people panic, start stocking up grocery, start planning emergency situation arise where they cannot go out of the house anymore, family get \"lockdown\", cannot go out, how they going to eat ?

if anyone in the family get infected, the whole household will also be impacted

                        eg

if a primary school student gets infected

both parents cannot go to work, will need to enter LOA as well, means cannot go out
while Hospital ambulance sent the student (child) into isolation ward

see, is not just the child alone, but parents also impacted, inconvenienced
I accidentally tap on a “like” for you phtthp. Meant only to reply to yr rich imagination. This is what those who think too much, think beyond facts, think into imaginary realm that sets yourself and those others in the long Qs.

BIL jokingly said all the Instant noodles gone off the shelves except one packet of Wuhan noodles nobody touch.
