Hi Lynn2
I observe what DD do when doing the MCQ:
If the question given 4 statements in A, B, C and D, the MCQ would ask like:
1)A & D
2) A, B & C
3) B, C & D
4) None of the above
She would review the A-D statements, then cross out those not possible first before attempt to the answer.
Hope this help. -
In lower primary, we use band 1 (85% & above), band 2 etc.
For PSLE, we use A*, A, B, C, D, E & U (ungraded).
Is A* = 90% & above?
What about A, B, C, D & E.
Thanking you in advance. -
Hi Brenda10 and VC mummy
thanks for the advice.
So, she has to review statement A to D one by one and to get the correct answer?
May I know do u know what is the difference between psle ultimate science guide and ultimate sci guide for upper block? How do you go about in using the ultimate sci guide to coach your girl?thanks

Information extracted from the school handbook:
(Grade for Subjects offered at Standard Level for P5 & P6)
A* > or equal 91
A 75 – 90
B 60 - 74
C 50 – 59
D 35 – 49
E 20 – 34
U (Ungraded) < 20
Hope the above information help. -

Not by bell-curve??? I always thought from P5 onwards, school will follow the PSLE standard and apply the bell-curve on their cohort to determine the grading of ABC for each subject.

If i am not wrong, all these specified marks for grades (be it at p6, sec4 or jc level) are meant for sch exam use. For national exams its bell curve time. -

By going through the statements would help to rule out those statements which are not possible. If you straight away review the choice of answers then you may have end up repeatedly visit the same statement which is time consuming.
(I’m sorry if the explanation not clear as my English is not good)
For Science Guide Book, dd would reference “Ultimate Science Guide for upper block” when in doubt or facing any problem on school work. This book provides more in-dept knowledge and also illustrate with several “Walk through Experiment”. I think the experiments help to improve the skills on answering the open and end questions. I only revise with her on the concept map and certain experiments.
Perhaps I am more concern on the Maths (Heard too many scary cases) for the past few months and now is also important to buck up the others 3 subject as well.
Wish all our P5 children good luck on their learning journey toward the next year PSLE. :celebrate: -

The PSLE ultimate science guide is a combination of lower block (Primary 3 & 4) ultimate science guide + Upper block (Primary 5 & 6) ultimate science guide with slight variations in presentation (more like summarising all important points from lower block+upper block) but the basic concepts are the same.Pls go to this http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?p=197377#197377 for comments made by caroline3sg and Joy about this series.
If you have the upper block+lower block, there is no need to buy the PSLE ultimate science guide IMHO. If you want to save cost, then buy the PSLE ultimate science guide to last through P3 to P6 and it is cheaper to buy one thick book (670 pages) than to buy 2 different books (284 pages and 356 pages).
This series was not available during my time when I took PSLE 2008. My mum bought the lower block in 2009 for my then P4 younger sister and bought the upper block this year (2010) for my P5 younger sister. The PSLE ultimate science guide was bought out of curiosity to check out the difference recently.
My younger sister is using this series for reference purpose.
Hope this helps. -

Usually the schools will have a Statistics Summary Sheet given out with the Report Book, right? From there, you can see your child's standing vis-a-vis his cohort in the school. Usually there are statistics for his class as well as the stats for the whole level. So you can even see the standing of his class (the good or weaker class)., and the breakdown is shown for every subject as well.
I am puzzled. Are the schools not aware that by doing so, the kids may missed a chance for DSA which look at their P6 SA1 result? No?sally72:
May refer to my last year post - 40/100 for SA1 MATHS
Every school wanted to set a higher PSLE standard...
I include this Stats Summary sheet together with copies of my son's reportbook for DSA.
The schools that he applies for DSA can see straightaway that even if the grade is low, vis-a-vis the class/level, he's doing well.
