Lol, you should gather IQ maths information first for p3. MO comes after p3.Hi Mathsparks,
thanks for the information. they cater to audience of P5 & P6. DS is disqualified as he is P1 only.... he is a math enthusiast...though a bit too early to talk about it, I already start to collect all MO-related infomation... see how HyperKiasu I am.... -
CoffeeCat:
some school give MO for level as low as P2. but to HA class only.

when to expose kids to MO depends on their aptitude not on their ages....
-
mathsparks:
if the child doesn't have the aptitude, then signed up for what??? :? :?
You don't need invitation to attend these training but, of course, the child must have the aptitude for it; else it would be a waste of time and money.
normal math enrichment is more suitable perhaps... -
mathsparks:
May I know how effective is the course? Must the kids have some basic MO knowledge to benefit from it? TIAHi hyperkiasu,
Singapore Maths Society also conducts MO classes. Their instructors are lecturers from the Uni and son once had a dr something who taught him.

Smarter kids are generally more suited for MO training at an early age. However I specify IQ maths for kids of average ability and above because once their reasoning skills are developed they can easily catch up with the others.
There is a limit to what a kid can learn and understand in the lower primary, and much progress in MO is actually made in the p5-6 years. -
snowz:
From the topics listed, kids without basic Mo knowledge can sign up and benefit because they are teaching from basics. They are likely to be taught a lot, so it will be effective if the students are willing to spend some time at home to review and digest the information.

Like what they say the basic requirements is strong in maths to be able to follow their pace. -

To me there is no difference in being exposed to MO later, as long as the kid has good fundamental reasoning skills and not miss the deadline for tests.[/quote]ya, there is. also to my surprise, a huaykuan pri school parent told me so... -
Lol, how are they going to select =.=.

I am not sure whether kid's IQ can be trained.
but if IQ math training can improve kids' reasoning skills, why MO training can't? a bit confused :? -
HyperKiasu:
The issue of improving a kid's IQ is controversial. My view is IQ tests test on basic reasoning skills, and it is possible to train the kids to a certain extent by exposing them to such questions and getting them to think. Rather than seeing it as an improvement of IQ, see it as helping the kids to realise or reach their potential IQ.CoffeeCat:

MO training emphasizes more on math techniques. Sure after MO training one's reasoning skills will definitely improve. I am just saying that for the kids of average ability they can focus on improving their fundamental reasoning skills before mo training (because since as you said, they are excluded from MO training at a younger age based on aptitude).
Eventually the kids' ability to reason well will benefit them in grasping more complex ideas (this explains why some kids can understand some concepts but the rest of the kids can't) and applying what they know to solve unfamiliar questions.
