Depend on what level, the children are in
Two burning questions...
1). Wonder whether MOE will take the chance to close schools for 14 days after this March term break. I don’t mind shortening the Nov/Dec holidays by two weeks to compensate for it.
2). How many new cases per day must we have before MOH will give up on contract tracing? More and more cases not as detailed as previously, seems like the contact trackers are starting to get burnt out?
For those Not taking National exam this year, can consider close school for 2 weeks, i.e. those in honeymoon lower primary (P1 / P2) or in mid primary P3 / P4 or in lower Secondary honeymoon years (1 and 2)
But for students taking Psle (born 2008), or taking O-level (born 2004), or taking A-level (born 2002), this year 2020 -
They cannot afford to close school
for 14 days, because mid year exam SA1 is coming soon, in May 2020, the week right after Labor day holiday, that week. And many P6 students depend on P6 SA1 results, to apply for DSA 3 choices, into their desired Secondary school. And MOE DSA portal will open up for online application, soon after the mid year SA1 is over in May 2020, after exam test scripts are marked by class Teachers & returned back to students, reviewed by parents
If schools were to close 2 weeks, means that the school Teachers cannot complete cover teaching their Moe school syllabus in time, for mid year exam.
Miss 1 week of lesson, still ok.
But not miss 2 weeks of lesson, there's a lot to catch up !
For DSA,
the time constraint is set, because All Secondary schools must give final verdict of DSA outcome to All DSA applicants, whether receive Confirmed Offer or Wait list or rejected, by the latest date line 31 August 2020. Minus backwards time required, to attend Sports trial / subject tests / specific DSA domain tests / interview, all these take time
Unless
1)
this year, DSA outcome notification extend beyond 30 Aug 2020
+
2) SEAB is willing, to postpone and delay, push back PSLE or O level or A level starting date for Oral + for Written Paper exam, to a later date, in view of virus pandemic -

SL, good point raised !
I worry if our hospitals can cope despite reports said G is prep to expand etc.
Beds and facilities can increase, medical professionals can't increase overnight.
Big countries hv deep pockets to cushion the economy impacts, how long can our little red dot sustain? -
list out already or not? big portion imported

In case this frightens people like it did me, the ban applies to a list of countries, i.e. those which have high rates of transmission. Others need to get visas. I have a non-Indon friend in Singapore for a few days who has left his family in Indon, and the above gave me a shock!
1) Indonesia announced that she will close her door to foreign arrival for 1 month, starting with effect from
this Friday 20 March 2020, time 00 West Indonesian time

School closures by themselves - would it be useful?
Probably need to couple with stay at home advisories - otherwise large groups of kids, instead of being in school where some social distancing can be enforced - they are milling around in fast food outlets or malls or public libraries etc - i don’t think it will help much in containing spread. -

Agree. Young kids are easily restless too. They need constructive things to occupy their time with.

I still see moderate numbers of secondary school students going back to school during these March holidays.
MOH has said that they won’t order school closures unless they start seeing evidence of the school-going age group being at higher risk, or of them being super-spreaders to vulnerable family members.
In any case, we can expect plenty of kids whose parents have happily taken them on overseas holiday cos unwilling to cancel or whatever, waiting out their compulsory 14-day SHN, which will last till 1-2 weeks after Term 2 starts. I’d expect many classrooms to be less than full when Term 2 reopens.
That should buy us a bit more time, flatten the curve a little bit.
