Berries has a lot of preschool kids. This e-learning thing is not gonna be effective for them cos it’s too easy to be distracted at home. The teachers rely on group peer pressure in the classroom, eagle-eyed spotting & immediate verbal cues to focus back their attention.

The kids also need a tech savvy adult to be beside them to help them login the website etc. FTWP, can they realistically outsource to grandparents or maid to help with this??

These are for our returnees, right? The rates are very affordable now. I once said in the 'SPERS' thread that overseas Singaporean expats, entrepreneurs and students are mostly our crème de la crème. Our global talent and brains that had left our shores to further their studies/work or venture overseas. I guess it's good that they think of Home in times like this, and MFA openly welcomes them Home, so expect more to return, and house them in paid hotels we will. SGUnited

I do not see many Chinese returning to HK and TW because their drained brains had mostly taken up passports of another democratic sovereign state. 😉

              Exactly !

Some pre school kids inside Chinese tuition start as young as 3.5 or 4 years old. You expect a 3.5 year old kid to attend an online class, by himself ?

End up parents still got to guide & teach their own young 4 year or 5 year old kids Chinese, in the end. For Nursery N2, they still need face to face classroom teaching. Forcing kids to go online computer screen from 4 year old, is Wrong !

              At 4 year old,

Children should be reading story books, not get them exposed to online computer screen ! Not only will it affect their precious eye sight, but will also lead to early computer addiction. You want to see more young kids end up wearing glasses so soon ?

              For online lessons,
the child must be somewhat mature, of a certain older age, be independent enough to sit & pay full attention themselves, and also understand the danger behind, what is computer addiction all about ?

                :thankyou: zac's mum

Just a little gesture, and most importantly, to ensure continuity in kids' learning. Too early for PSLE topic this year since it was set earlier 😂 but for Sec sch CL, we do take the opportunity to cover relevant topics like 假新闻 ('news','remedies' etc.),恶搞的极限 (lift button + test drink video on 'How to spread Wuhan') and 社会责任 (social responsibility, personal hygiene etc.)

20 mins is indeed a little too short. On the other hand, as mentioned, there are also challenges for younger kids to attend \"live\" lessons. 😓

For \"live\" lessons to be carried out for the usual duration wouldn't be a problem, in fact, I can foresee lessons \"overshooting\", for lessons that are conducted in interactive manner (as opposed to one-way lectures). Pre-recorded ones will be different.

In order to get ready instructions and set up the tools to be used for e-learning and for everyone to get on board, I am delivering this week's affected lessons in a worksheet + pre-recorded video manner. I recorded the first of my pre-recorded videos yesterday and the duration lasted about 1 hr 15 min, which is 30 mins shorter than the usual duration. However, I guess it's understandable since there were no long pauses to wait for students to finish their writing or answer queries (instead, at appropriate times, I advised them to pause the video). Thus, I also set aside dedicated time for consultation (which I believe many centres are doing, too)

It was a little strange \"talking to\" the laptop but since I have been using TV + laptop (cheapo \"smartboard\" style  ) to conduct lessons in class all along, the major difference was the absence of students and no classroom management skills involved. \"Thanks\" to the current situation, I got my YouTube channel set up too. 😂

On a side note, there's sale on Lazada today - parents who need to get accessories for e-learning can take a look. 😄

Which of these centres are still asking parents to deliver & collect hardcopy worksheets to the physical branch?

Which of them are giving parents the option to opt out of e-learning? Any refund?

I really don’t like how there’s a lack of options given to parents. My kid is middle/upper primary still ok. But those with preschool to lower primary level, there are issues such as too much unnecessary screen time, the kids need the parent to help login, type or spell questions, adjust the settings for the video conferencing apps etc etc.

I still have some spare time to set all this up cos I’m part time & WFH. How are those FTWPs with multiple kids coping with having to set up all this extra stuff??

One is my friends is trying to dust off her old outdated laptops to see if they have the correct specifications for her 2 kids to use - one is PSLE kid and likely needs his own dedicated laptop to manage all the new learning. If video conferencing, also each kid/WFH parent needs their own room otherwise can hear each other speaking in the background, sometimes confidential work stuff.
This is exactly the pain I am going through now. Only HCL gives the option to opt out and I am really appreciative of that.

I have 3 kids. On Sat, their tuition timing is almost the same, start between 9am to 10am. I need to have 3 laptops so that they can join the online lessons. On TOP of that, they need to be in separate rooms but not all the rooms have strong wifi connection is another headache. Tuition centres told me “not to worry” because the kids can also join using phone! For goodness sake, I was really on the verge of shouting at them, asking them to please use their common sense! Such a small screen on the hp, how can the child see clearly? Even tell me no notes is ok because it is video conferencing. I told them off. Even for adults we also need to have our materials or printouts ready for meeting in order for us to be able to take down notes! Let alone kids attending lessons! It is really too much!

I foresee many parents withdrawing after Term 2. This is gonna be a long fight and social distancing is gonna be part of our daily life till year end. Looking at the size of the tuition classrooms I have been to before, I don't know if they can meet the WHO's criteria of safe distancing. They will have to split the classes and that may upset the timetables of many.
Aiyo, malls also got crowd control measures now. So many popular tuition centres inside small shopping malls. How to pick up younger children without standing within 1 m from another parent in a small space? Some tuition centres need to take lifts. Now must wait longer for the next lift. Those with back to back classes must buffer extra minutes to centre-hop and to park.

                      https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/covid-19-authorities-spell-out-ways-malls-limit-number-shoppers-ensure-safe-distancing

These are going to kill half of the tuition/enrichment sector.

Are enrichment Centres still operating today? Saw many in total darkness but Adam Khoo’s & MindChamps still operating with kids’ shoes on shoe racks. Saw Anytime Gym still many patrons exercising inside.
