Tuition centers should not force parents to accept digital learning at full fees.

I would like to share my experience with chenlaoshi’s response to the sudden shock ruling in this past week (in fact less than a week). Although he is not a big tuition centre but he runs group classes.
Like everyone, I’m sure he was taken by surprise at the sudden forced closure. Yet he took the time to pause, think very carefully how to solve this problem. He spent the time to explore all various types of platforms before he decided on which one would be the most effective. He kept us parents updated via WhatsApp each step of the way.
He did not rush in to implement any changes. First he assured us that any e-lessons would be free of charge for these 5 weeks shutdown, which is nobody’s fault. For us to trial out and get used to the system first.
Next, he decided to start off with a Pre-recorded video for the missed lesson, log in at own time own target. He even did a how-to video guide in English for us parents to understand how to join the Google Classroom, how to submit homework etc. Then in the lesson video he assured the kids themselves that they could pause at any time if they need to review or finish copying down notes.
Next week will be the first “live” session via Zoom. Again he sends us detailed instructions on how to set it up. With the option to WhatsApp him for any queries.
To me, that should be the gold standard for how to transit to new technology platform. Parents definitely have to assist the kids with setting all this up, including sitting beside them to remind them pay attention etc. How can those tuition centers expect buy-in from parents when they can’t provide proper how-to guide or support?? This week brings back memories of my previous experience being involved in smart classroom pilot program at one of my previous schools (for Pri 4 level).
This is a good opportunity for educators to look deeper into how to tap on ICT to enhance learning process as well as facilitate communication. That said, the amount of back end job can often be overlooked/underestimated. I'm sure processes will be fine tuned and improved upon along the way.

tutor himself can be the connection point, for virus carrier
- various students going to the same tutor's house, can also spread virus at tutor's house during lesson itself.
After the lesson over, virus-carrier student left tutor's house. But, the next innocent student entering tutor's house can become victim
make all the students going to private tutor's house, wear N-ninety-five mask.

Many parents go to certain enrichment centers because of the branding (a.k.a marketing and advertising), the hear-says from office colleagues and for the bragging rights in the office pantry. They are probably too busy to really discern quality. For most of them, sub-standard \"digital\" learning is most likely \"ok\". They will just cpcb a bit and then accept it all.
if the \"digital\" learning material content is really sub-standard in the Tuition centre, in the end who pay the price, when come to actual mid-year exam SA1 or year-end exam SA2 ?
Answer : will be their own kids.
By then, these parents will panic, wondering why they had paid so much tuition fees, expecting quality delivery, yet in the end, their child still do poorly, in SA1 or SA2.
whose fault ?
parents fault, because in the first case, they did not even bother to do any homework background check, check whether the quality of the content delivered online, will benefit or help their child, if they just simply assume, brush it off that everything is going to be ok
In fact, why Tuition centre prefer online teaching ?
because
can take in more students now, as the lessons are conducted online, inside student's own home, no need to go tuition centre premises anymore, off-load the burden of the centre having the need to find student, a table and chair to sit down. At physical premises, due to classroom constraint, centre maybe can take in maximum 10 kids per class Now, go online ? No more physical constraint encountered, can take in more than 10 kids concurrently online, earn more $, have more business
online learning -
child must be independent and have the desire to want to learn.
Imagine parents paid so much for online lesson fees, but his own child not interested to study online.
Even when Tr pose questions online, student \"bo chap\" attitude, not interested to learn, can't be bothered to answer Tr questions, dozed off in the comfort of his arm-chair at home in front of the pc, parents also don't know that kid not keen, while in contrast those other students who are very keen in learning, will bother to quickly type into the key-board, reply back Tr questions instantly on the spot

End up, is always those few hardworking students, answering Teacher's queries.
The rest, what happen ?
no action from them on keyboard, to answer Teacher's questions posed online
don't know whether they are still sitting in front of the pc listening to Teacher's lesson, or their mind already drifted off somewhere else far away, or they doing something else at home instead, especially. when parents are not around at home or not at the student care centre
for online learning -
a) good delivery content, must be there
b) check your own child's learning attitude.

Don’t think tuition centers prefer online platform… it’s the mandatory closure notice that’s forcing everyone to go online. Some of them… have double the work to do… both online now and later on replacing the physical class.

sit in front of a computer for 3 hours, is too taxing, tiring, sometimes eye strain
after one hour, your concentration power begin to drift off
ask yourself
If we as adults, if we were to sit right in front of a computer for 3 hours long, how u feel ?
can take it, or struggling ?
If we as adults cannot take it, how to expect young children to take it ?
Furthermore, ask yourself, in Total, how many subjects are your kid going to take tuition, online, for 3 hour duration ?

suppose parents \"forced\" their kid to take online tuition for all 4 PSLE subjects [English, Mother tongue, Maths, Science]
every week : say, each subject is of 3 hours online tuition
Total : 4 subjects x 3 hours, equal 12 hours
u know what's going to happen ?
soon, u will find your own child wearing glasses, due to eye strain and in one week, spent too many hours in front of a computer
Or
if your child already wearing glasses, soon his or her glasses degree will deepen fast, and you need to bring child to spectacle shop, increase the degree. Bad ! -
I'm with zeal'mummy on this - it could be Less beneficial to conduct online tutoring, from a classroom-setting centre's perspective:
(1) Prying eyes of parents (Jec used to shoo me away from their classroom door/ common corridor - haha)
(2) Easier duplication of copyright materials
(3) Closer scrutiny of materials & teaching methodologies (instead of broadcasting a thematic video, the tutor may now need to make it available longer for the student's use)
(4) Like our forummers have also posted, there's a lot more hard work behind the scenes/ webcam... -

The other centers stick to their stipulated class hours and provided 10 mins break for every hour of class. I think they shouldn’t short change people ya..
