Dunman is an autonomous school as compare to independent school like HCI l, RGS, RI…etc.

What is the difference in turn of government funding? How about teachers recruitment?
How much school fee do you have to pay each month?

Yes, although the phone is necessary for Secondary school Whatsapp and emails, many students spend time watching videos as well. When my child was in P6, her classmates shared with her that they spend many hours watching YouTube videos.

Thanks ‘Tookies’, I have installed parental control app Qustodio. It is quite user friendly.

Hi all, just wanted to have a rough gauge of how many females are there in each level / class compared to the total number of people

                Eg. Girls:20 Total: 100

                  The ratio of girls:boys = 2:1

My DS is in P6 and originally, one of the schools we were thinking to have him apply is DHS. I can understand how Pinklily feels because my DS has no hp (and doesn’t wish for one till now), uses a calculator, reads books and engages in non hp pastimes.

I think we can agree to the fact that kids in the technology age need to use hp. What I feel somewhat uncertain are the potential side effects that come with the usage.
At the risk of over-complicating things,
                      (a) if the kid has no addiction to hp yet he is in an environment with overwhelming usage of hp, then he will feel left out. At their age, I think friendship is important and he can feel out of place if their discussion topics are mainly around hp social usage. Unless of course, he can find a network of friends who aren’t hp addicts, but this is not straightforward. How do we know who will join the school ? So the school’s stance and possibly policy effectiveness (to curb excessive usage) becomes important.
                      (b) I have to admit that I don’t understand enough about heavy users of hp. My DD was in Sec 1 last year and the only person in the class without a hp (when the school said hp can be used). I can see her initial struggles (her friends have been understanding enough after a while) but in the end, she topped the class and when we got her a hp from Sec 2 onwards, she was conscious enough on non-essential usage.
© then there are questions on the type of kids around the kid. These kids may have other safety nets in place…Do they use hp for so much whatsapp communications till they lose opportunities to hone their for face to face interactions ? Do they over use hp to the extent that it is use as a tool for convenient communications without developing organizational/ planning skills ? Not as an offence to teachers but do they demonstrate these skills instead of dishing out info not well thought out last minute ? If hp usage is only 30 minutes per week excluding school quizzes, how high are the chances that the kid will be alienated from the peers ?
                      (d) we know not all schools are lax about hp usage even among the ip ones. This is not a compliment for CHS but kids at Sec 1 and Sec 2 are not allowed to use hp…
Parenting these days aren’t easier than before.
If there is feedback from parents in this forum on insights to better handle this, including which schools have what type of hp policies, I will appreciate very much. Thanks

My son is in Sec 1 this yr. So far, it has mainly been a good experience… according to him, teachers are very nice and from what I see, his workload is manageable at least for now. He has always managed to go to bed before 10pm every night.

As for handphone usuage, I think it depends on the child. My personal view is that children can be given the hp if parents feel they are mature enough to be responsible users.
