I just learn about STELLAR program from you 😉 I google and found this.

        http://www.stellarliteracy.sg/cos/o.x?c=/wbn/pagetree&func=view&rid=20699

The school will have a list of standard story books for the kids, right ? If every child brings his or her own book, then everyone will be doing different things ?
I can't remember if a list of books was given but I think in class, they will have the same set of books. Only for reading period then they will bring their own.

More on STELLAR has been shared here:

          http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1986&highlight=stellar

For our school, only 1 storybook to buy. The rest are big books used in the school by the teachers to deliver the different themes and then grammar, vocab, cloze, etc related to this theme...forms the worksheets done in school. Storybooks choices for other reading is currently by choice.

Thanks all for the information 😉 Sounds like an interesting program. But I guess that will mean that the child needs to be reading quite well before entering P1. The teacher is not going to have time to give one to one coaching to a child who has difficulty reading, right ? Parents will probably need to spend more time to coach the child at home.

Sounds like my English Literature lessons in Secondary School !

My girls' school does not give them english text book.

Teachers asked parents to provide more story books for the kids to let them read everyday. I'm not sure what kinds of books are good for P1's reading, I hope I can get some recommandation from Kiasu parents.

              Thanks a lot.....
Borrow from national library. Plenty of series to choose from.
I like the banana series, different colour coded for different level readers.

Thank so much for your recommandations, thank buds, schellen, ks2me, Cartier, tamarind and sleepy…

My girl is in P1. I don’t know whether my gg is going through the STELLAR program or not, I only know one of the story book is about the forest, animals… Her form teacher tell me that they use big story book in the class, and ask kids to read small story book at home. My girl’s english is not so strong, and this will affect her math comprehesnion.

My friends recommand me the Peter and Janes Book series. I found them in Popular, but I don’t know which grade is for P1 student.

I really appreciate parents reply, i think i have got the idea how to get right books for my girl. Maybe I’ll equiry her teacher about the STELLAR program, thus I can know her class better.

ctc61t, for my girl, we were briefed about the STELLAR programme on the day we brought her to register at the sch, in Nov last year. Did you get a similar briefing?

About the Peter and Jane/Ladybird series, don’t go by P1 standard first, especially if you think your girl is a weak reader. My girl is a strong reader for English (and weak for Chinese) so she may be above average for a P1 when it comes to this series. Just bring your girl to Popular and choose a level you think she is at, and ask her to read on the spot for you. Then, based on her reading, you either move up or down the level or stay put, if you’re on target.

I just realised that I promised to check my girl's mini library at home and put up a few titles. Sorry. I actually write the titles down but kept forgetting to post. Besides the series already mentioned in my previous post here (on pg 1), here are some more.

                      1. School dictionary: First reference for young readers and writers published by Ladybird (not a storybook but good for spelling difficult words and understanding their meanings. Child-friendly for use and price-friendly for parents. Bought it at Popular.)

                      4. The English Roses: Too Good To Be True by Madonna (There are many other titles under the English Roses series and they are all beautifully illustrated.)

Basically, these are what my girl likes to read over and over again.
                      More in the next post.....

These are a few titles that we have at home.

You don't have to buy cos you can always borrow from the library. Once you know what your children like and their reading mastery level, you will have no problem finding books for them.
