        MrsKiasu:
        Hello Mks! +4weeks...

        (1) My P3's mid year assessment is cancelled, & there wasn't much HBL work in the 1st 2 weeks; but, the amount seems to be gradually added. This week, the form class (split into smaller groups of 10 or less students per session) start meeting up Live online (Google Meet; school has assigned students with individual Gmail accounts), just to touch base on general well-being.

My secondary school ones are busy, very - but, one of the principals wrote to inform us Not to worry. For them, there will be No weighted pen and paper exam, just focus on skills and content, plus there'll be recovery of content (if necessary) once school resumes. For the other, Moelc has released (last Friday, via teacher by email to students) an updated assessment plan for Term2 (comprising of assignments, SLS quizzes).

I believe that teachers know best, & would leave it entirely to their discretion.

        (2) If the tuition centre can convince us that its online course is deserving? of our time+resource investment, we would naturally continue to support their online course...
hello sky.. yes +4wks .. thought very good right..now count another 6 wks at home..only 2 wks passed..will go mad or not arh..but good for dd1 la, I told her to better study properly la, do some catch up etc..aiyo worrying.

good they have recovery in content after school reopen..I believe my dd will be gabra with so many new things.

I dont check on the kid's curriculum..I trust they doing what is right..zoom/meet time I let her in room closed door herself..let her have some privacy. do you all stay next to kids? dont need right. I check the online work every few days ensure none in progress or haven't start. I think I m very bad..now 2 mths hbl I better buck up abit.
I need to stay next to my son during his video conferencing (school & tuition), to be discipline mistress :spank: Just to make sure he is paying attention. He is well-behaved enough to gauge my Tiger mum warning face & not join all the classmates’ boliao text spamming while the teacher is trying to teach her lesson. BUT he is very easily distracted by watching their text chats. Ended up hardly listening to the teacher at all. He is learning to self-regulate and close the chat box so that he can focus better. But he will still have FOMO and open it once a while to see the chat.

Some school teachers are more fierce and outright tell them NO CHITCHAT during lesson otherwise disciplinary action will be taken. Anybody who wants to ask qn needs to click “raise hand” button, wait for teacher to call name, then can unmute themselves to talk.

For SLS, I can trust him to do the assignments himself in his room, but I will walk past regularly to check on him. Or he will come out for break after each subject to say hi to me.

              - HBL is a fall back when schools are suspended; it cannot be a prolonged substitute for school.

              - It is better to let everyone have a break from this intense period. MOE will therefore bring forward the June holidays to start from 5 May. It will then cover the entire extended circuit breaker until 1 Jun 2020.

This would mean that Term 3 will be very long. So we will factor in an additional one week, mid-term break from 20-26 July. Term 3 will comprise 7 weeks, one week break and then 6 weeks. Most teachers will use the break to review or re-plan their lessons.

The additional break of one week will reduce curriculum teaching time. As it is, the pace of HBL tends to be slower than classroom teaching. We will therefore also make certain topics commonly taught by all schools at the end of the academic year be non-examinable. Some of these topics are pie charts and volume for PSLE Maths, Organic chemistry and vectors for O level Chemistry and Maths respectively.

This will reduce the curriculum load and ease the pressure off teachers and students in catching up with the curriculum. Just to be clear, as far as possible, these topics will still be taught. But they will not appear as questions in the national examinations.

              - We will do two other things during the brought forward mid-year holidays.

First, our graduating cohorts need support as to prepare for their national exams. For this coming mid-year holidays, our schools will continue to do so, including having them come back to school for face-to-face consultation and coaching when the national situation improves – which we are confident will be the case.

Second, there is also another group that needs support – children of essential workers and vulnerable students. They have been coming back to school during the circuit breaker period. Our schools will remain open for them throughout the mid-year holidays, to support them and their families.

Our proper zoom lessons only started on 20 Apr. One 1.5hr lesson for 1 subject per day. 1 week only cover a fraction of what normal sch week covers. Not all schools are progressing at the same pace. Our class has over 40 kids too.

That’s why zoom is not a substitute, just a back up.

For those P6 and sec4, jc2 going back to sch in May, they will have to take public transport if parents do not drive them.

I have to work, so I didn't sit beside my kids. But tr chase us and a few other parents for missing sls work. Kids got to juggle sls announcements by diff subj trs, hbl timetable, Zoom timetables for diff groups etc. I realised, these are not what kids normally used to, am I asking for too much.
For eg, kid was doing math sls halfway, switch to zoom lesson, forgot to continue where he left off after zoom ended, or read the list of items from 1 subj tr and close it, but never check back at end of day.
The handbook routine switch to HBL needs a lot of adjustment for my kids.

The demands of P3 maths concept vs p5 are not comparable. If my kids are p3 now, I think my kids would have less prob. But the more in depth qns of maths to be taught via zoom, teachers know, they can only only reach a few kids at most at a time.
Hence, HBL may need a bit of tech support for younger kids, but for upp pri kids, learning harder concepts via HBL in a class of 40+, not that straightforward, parents need to eyeball too
