The ratio of girls:boys = 2:1
Hi all, just wanted to have a rough gauge of how many females are there in each level / class compared to the total number of people
Eg. Girls:20 Total: 100 -

My DS is in P6 and originally, one of the schools we were thinking to have him apply is DHS. I can understand how Pinklily feels because my DS has no hp (and doesn’t wish for one till now), uses a calculator, reads books and engages in non hp pastimes.
I think we can agree to the fact that kids in the technology age need to use hp. What I feel somewhat uncertain are the potential side effects that come with the usage.
At the risk of over-complicating things,
(a) if the kid has no addiction to hp yet he is in an environment with overwhelming usage of hp, then he will feel left out. At their age, I think friendship is important and he can feel out of place if their discussion topics are mainly around hp social usage. Unless of course, he can find a network of friends who aren’t hp addicts, but this is not straightforward. How do we know who will join the school ? So the school’s stance and possibly policy effectiveness (to curb excessive usage) becomes important.
(b) I have to admit that I don’t understand enough about heavy users of hp. My DD was in Sec 1 last year and the only person in the class without a hp (when the school said hp can be used). I can see her initial struggles (her friends have been understanding enough after a while) but in the end, she topped the class and when we got her a hp from Sec 2 onwards, she was conscious enough on non-essential usage.
then there are questions on the type of kids around the kid. These kids may have other safety nets in place…Do they use hp for so much whatsapp communications till they lose opportunities to hone their for face to face interactions ? Do they over use hp to the extent that it is use as a tool for convenient communications without developing organizational/ planning skills ? Not as an offence to teachers but do they demonstrate these skills instead of dishing out info not well thought out last minute ? If hp usage is only 30 minutes per week excluding school quizzes, how high are the chances that the kid will be alienated from the peers ?
(d) we know not all schools are lax about hp usage even among the ip ones. This is not a compliment for CHS but kids at Sec 1 and Sec 2 are not allowed to use hp…
Parenting these days aren’t easier than before.
If there is feedback from parents in this forum on insights to better handle this, including which schools have what type of hp policies, I will appreciate very much. Thanks -
My son is in Sec 1 this yr. So far, it has mainly been a good experience… according to him, teachers are very nice and from what I see, his workload is manageable at least for now. He has always managed to go to bed before 10pm every night.
As for handphone usuage, I think it depends on the child. My personal view is that children can be given the hp if parents feel they are mature enough to be responsible users. -
But it is compulsory for DHS students from Sec 1 to have a hp because the school makes it compulsory for them to use hp, right ? Is this a misconception on my part or something I have missed out inadvertently ?

Ya to me it seemed like.

Some teachers are making use of emails, google share and classroom for assignments , answers and homeworks. Some teachers still sent out whatsapp as a reminder to students which i feel that students r too rely on that. Been through HBL and noticed some teachers sent out live meeting schedule through WHARSAPP ONLY!!! A partial of them, do not sent out email of homework and using whatsapp as a communication channel. -
may i check if Dunman High has an O level track? Checked everywhere on MOE and sch website but they are all silent on this. If one fails in IP track, what happens?
Also, trying to understand chances of DSA through leadership or biculturalism, anyone can kindly shed some light?
1. If the child has no competition experience, but was awarded "Best in Chinese" consistently in Primary School since P1 - will the child stand a good chance?
2. The child is a prefect and has been monitor, junior leader, junior prefect since P1, will the child stand a good chance? She is now a normal prefect but not holding any Committee positions. -

Dunman HIgh is an IP school.

They are all silent because officially, NO O-level track marked,
since the expected completion exit point is at A-level only, as DHS is a 6 years through-train A-level programme, by-passing O-level altogether.
However, if one doesn't do well , cannot cope with IP programme by the end of Secondary 2 -
these IP students are identified by their various Sec 2 form teachers, they will exit out (drop-out) of IP, transferred over another class to take GCE O level. After O-level, they can go Polytechnic, or join another A-level Junior college. Alternately, if they are able to meet DHS L1R5 Cut-off-point (after sat O-level), these students can still join back DHS A-level. However, most students who exited out of DHS, would prefer to go to some other A-level Junior Colleges start afresh in a new different school environment, instead. Perhaps they think too many of their ex-classmates recognized them. Yes, for as long as their L1R5 fall within maximum 20 points allowed by MOE regulation, they can still join back an A-level Junior College, if they are interested in pursuing JC path. Yishun-Innova (YIJC) is the last JC, that take in students, both for A-level (Science & Arts) stream, at 20 points L1R5 max.

sometimes, around 20+ IP students will be identified at end of Sec 2, to exit IP, do their O-level. These students can be from DSA, or had entered via PSLE T-score.
Why are these IP students, only identified to move over to O-level @end of Sec 2, if they cannot cope ?
because
preparation for O-level National exam, required 2 tedious, comprehensive years hard work of preparation. -
Just to add on some information, if at the end of Y2, their L1R5 GPA is below 2.4, then the students will have to go through additional lesson during the End of Year holiday and sit for another exam. If they manage to clear the exam, then they will be able to continue in Y3 IP, otherwise, they will go the Y3 ‘O’ level class. Normally there is one class reserved for each cohort for this though the class size is extremely small and this year, I understand everyone manage to clear the bar, so there is no ‘O’ level class for Y3 at all.

Thanks much for the sharings, phtthp, gancheongdaddy!
Btw, is L1R5 GPA2.4, an average of 65%? - thank you in advance.
