P1 & P2, no stress, honeymoon years.
Government said no exam, for lower primary students, initial first 2 years.

stress may arise at end of P4, due to year end streaming, into various Upper primary P5 classes

students remain inside the same (P5 & P6 class).
so, no stress at end of P5, since no more streaming.

whether study in MGS, or study elsewhere in some other schools -
stress is common amongst P6 students,
as pupils faced PSLE National exam.
All want to do well, so as to enter good Secondary schools.

for MGS students,
they need to achieve minimum Tscore 220, to go back to their affliated MGS Secondary.
If they score one point less, at 219, even if they want to come back, MOE forbid.
At 219, MGPS girls will be posted to some other Secondary schools, instead.
This holds true, up to the last batch of 2020 P6 students, exiting (abandon) Tscore system.

Is it stressful, to score 220 ?

if a student faces learning difficulty in MGS, struggled, Yes, 220 is a tough, a tall order, for such students.
Otherwise, no issue. They can easily come back to their affliated MGS Secondary, study another 4 more years, sit for O-level, then join their affliated ACJC (Anglo-Chinese Junior college), for A-level.

But if they scored higher, way beyond 220, prefer to go to some other IP schools, don't want to stay back inside their affliated MGS Secondary any longer, also can, that is a separate matter.

How to achieve 220 ?
On average, the P6 pupil need to obtain at least 74 marks, per each of the 4 subjects.

To some pupils, it is challenging.

Is 220 hard? I remember someone on this forum said it could be all As but bad quality As - and land you below 220. Does the cop ever change yearly for their MGS kids?

Ok this time Im back asking about academics and stress. I have heard from plenty that kids from a top school gets compared more, sent to tuitions more, tougher exams, lots of studying, high stress level. Of course would you exchange that to be a stressful small fish in a big pond? And plenty excel in an average or above average school. My question is, is MGS stressful?? How are the girls coping with so much studying and comparison? Any parents or people with friends there want to share?

I have 2 nieces there, now P6, and my daughters were there on and off (we were overseas a lot) quite a few years ago. My impression is that MGS is overall not the most stressful of schools if you just look at what the school does. Most of the stress comes from some competitive parents/kids, and if you get caught up in that cycle, then you will be stressed. A lot also depends on the child's overall ability and standing in the school. One of my daughters is academically strong, and didn't find schoolwork stressful. My other daughter and 2 nieces are not as academic, and schoolwork did cause some stress. However, both my brother/sil and my husband/myself choose not to push that hard. Parents/kids can choose; you don't have to hang out with the most competitive ones.

One downside is the 220 COP for affiliated girls (but this is the last year of COP, I believe?) - my 2 nieces are not sure they can get into the sec school, and are sad but resigned about it. My older girl wasn't around for P6, but I think she might have had a problem too.

On the plus side, my girls and nieces (and I am an old girl) all enjoyed our MGS time. I can't compare with other schools, and many friends have enjoyed their time at their schools just as much. A lot depends on what you make of the school.

Thanks for sharing your story! Hows local and overseas studies interchanging for them? Do they find a problem to cope with the different systems? To get back into MGS after your overseas stint, your girls must have gotten in at P1 first right?

Hard or not is subjective, isnt it?

As for stress, I always think it is the family that gives the stress and not the school, whether it is mgs or another school.

I havent been following the new PSLE scoring system. So to be able to stay in MGS, how much in average per subject should a kid score? Just curious about the benchmark. Thanks

so there is a possibility, that they may do away with affliation next year, everyone entered Secondary schools fairly, based on AL points.

If really turn out to be true,
If indeed abolish affliation across the board for all O-level schools like ACS, MGS, SCGS, CHIJ Girls' schools, Catholic High, SJI, Maris Stella, then likewise, they should do the same, to be fair & square,
to the only IP affliated Secondary school in Singapore, as well : Nanyang Girls High
