Hi everyone,
I will conduct 3 online lectures on Youtube Live free of charge in the coming weeks. These lectures are actually part of a teacher training program I will be launching after the CB. It is geared towards acquiring DipABRSM Teaching certificate, but I'm keeping them accessible and easy to understand for parents/students who wish to have better ideas about learning music in general.
You could interact and ask questions using the Live Chat when the lectures were live. The lectures will still be available at the links afterwards if you wanted to review or missed it. The first one will be on this Friday night.
Teaching One to One - Approaches and Structures
The one to one lesson is the primary method of music instruction for most music teachers. In this lecture, you will learn to craft an engaging lesson that involves constant two-way interaction between you and your student. You will also learn to set learning goals and incorporate various components that make the lessons productive.

Hi all, I need advice. Dd (P3) has been playing piano for 3 years +. Took G1 and G3 under the same first teacher. Me and husband have no musical background, never learn. During process of G1-3, I learnt slowly with DD, I realised something is missing, her previous teacher did not cover in detail. She got distinctions for both barely
After I brought her after G3 exam round to look for a new teacher, I learnt the following: Her hand shape is very bad (fingers sticking out all over the place), flat fingers when playing scales, lack of phrasing. These are the feedback gathered after trials wit several Teachers. I was quite shocked at the realisation so many gaps in her learning. We ended up changing teacher.
Now with current teacher, yes some stuff has improved. But when playing if I donβt remind,I still see index finger and pinky poking out. I cannot tell properly but body is tense, I think Teacher is trying to change this. Now the current teacher want to go for G5 for 2021.
My question is: anyone can advice , can still take G5 with the foundation mistakes still there? I am just worried it will ingrained the bad habits.
Is it advisable to fix mistake first before thinking of proceeding to the next grade? I just want some informed views before I ask the teacher -

It is very much possible to still get distinction even up to grade 8 or Dip. with less than ideal technique because the exams examine the end musical results, not the technique. As long the pieces chosen do not expose the technical weakness, can work around technical limitation. This is speaking from personal experience.

One thing you have to be aware is that it takes a lot of willpower from the student to relearn good technique all over again. The student must want to do it and parents need to assist at home by providing feedback as it is not easy to observe everything yourself. It's not an overnight thing, it may take months to years. I have students who transferred to me after one or two years of initial study with another teacher. Even with consistent efforts to work on the bad habits one by one and a couple of years of study with me, they are still with struggling with bad habits they have learned previously.
Anyway, some of these students still end up taking exams and doing well for them. Those who chose not take exams still continue to learn pieces from the next grades. It is important for the student to know there are problems with the technique, but at the same time mentally it may be demoralising if progress is halted because of that. So my stand on this is can go to the next level as long technical issues are constantly being worked on.
Coincidentally, tonight at 8 PM I will be talking about this same issue in my third and final online lecture series on Youtube. It is part of my teacher training course but it should still be quite accessible enough for parents like you to understand. Detail in the post after this. -
Later tonight I will be conducting the third and final free lecture that is part of my teacher training course. It is a direct to point lecture focusing on how to teach good technique for piano beginners, but it should still be useful for parents who want an idea about what a good piano technique is.

Thank you Dreamaurora for the reassuring advice. Many other things were let slip too after today's piano lesson, I came to the conclusion that the previous teacher had been keep asking my girl to \"play louder the right hand\" but did not teach her how to choose which specific voice (middle or upper) as the current teacher is now teaching. It is very confusing for a non musical trained parent like us. I will let her watch your videos if have time. Thanks again and will go forward with the exam while keeping an eye on finger technique.
