as i mentioned before, i think the mark itself is not so important. it is how the child performs compared to cohort. if 1/2 cohort fails and your child gets band 2 (70-85), then it is still very good. compared to if the paper is easy and everyone scores in the 90s, then even if your child gets 90, it does not mean much. that's how i feel anyway...Thanks IJJ, I will try to take it easy. But it's hard to try to take it easy when you hear that 1/3 of the cohort failed their math exams. :scared:

janet, i hv 2 boys in P1 and P3. i believe that boys are slower to mature. for my sons, they need to be pushed to do homework or revise for their exams. otherwise they just act as if nothing to do... hopefully this will change when they are in upper pri.Hi IJJ,
Mine is a boy...and I heard that some boys take a longer time for their internal motivation to mature. Well, I hope he will WAKE UP and do his best to get into a secondary school of his dream.
Saturdays are spent learning EL spelling & dictation while Sundays are for 听写/默写. I have let go quite a bit in these areas as well as his school homework since he's already in P4.
As parents, we feel that our kids can always do better. For my son, I hope that he learns to be more careful and re-do his exam paper each time. My younger one is going to P1 next year...hope I have enough steam to continue to coach her.
IJJ/E3/dyh/Jennifer,
Let's encourage one another as our kids move up in PH. All the best. -

If you say your P3 boy is still immature...then he still have lots of potential to perform better as he matures.
I have not congrat you yet. He is really good in Maths, top the class. Congrats!!

Thanks, Janet!! Its great to know that we are just normal parents, trying our best to guide our kids along their primary school years.Hi IJJ,

My brain system sometimes auto shut down when the fear is too much for my heart to take.
Haha, psychologists say to overcome your fear is to confront them mah. Unless they're creepy crawlers :scared: then no need to confront.
It prefers to 'cross the bridge when I come to it'.

Thanks IJJ. when it comes to maths, he is self-driven and in autopilot mode. i hardly spent time on it with him to be honest. i am more worried about the 2 language subjects where he only got band 2. But i am very happy with his overall performance in SA1. i thank God for that.If you say your P3 boy is still immature...then he still have lots of potential to perform better as he matures.

Something that crossed my mind, from what I had analysed, the standard of PSLE Math questions at present and 5 years ago (when I quit teaching) are still pretty much the same. I had let my ex-students did the same kind of questions that came out in the news last year so I believe not much changes were done to syllabus. If 1/3 of P5 cohort flunked math, possible reason could be they had done well for CA1 Math, thus the school decided to set more 'out-of-the-world' non-routine, challenging questions to assess them. Best time to do it is for P5 SA1, isn't it? It's not such a bad thing afterall if every child can see this positively, remember their mistakes from the paper and strive to do better next time.
Thanks IJJ, I will try to take it easy. But it's hard to try to take it easy when you hear that 1/3 of the cohort failed their math exams. :scared:
Just my guess. Perhaps, P5 parents can share more. -

Congratulations dyh, on your ds's Math! Can consider NUS High next time.

Mine also scored band 2 for CL. She even flunked CL compo (9/20). Thankfully, she did ok for paper 2 and other components and managed to pull score to the 80s. Our merciful God, thanks!
Its great for your son to be self driven for maths. As long as kid has interest to study, its 事半功倍.

I think there's a lot of hidden dragons and crouching tigers in this thread. Must tread carefully ...
