HW odds is roughly 1.5X to 1.8X per vacancy. The last time the TUR is near to this year is 2016 which no need balloting for within 1km (only for 1-2km). But in 2018 only 27 vacancy but about 116 applied, i can only assume all are within 1km if not i wont know why parents want to add number for. The trend is tilted towards balloting within 1km but sometimes off results will happen.

KC seem more safe generally with one off the chart (freak) result in 2018 where within 1km need balloting. Odds seems lower than 1.5x in the event of a need for balloting 1-2km.

Back to your thought process, its never easy to choose and to decide that you are heading for balloting, it somehow take your own risk profile to do so. Some feels okie and some feels not. If you do have a selection of a backup in 2Cs then go for HW since you are near. If there is just between the two, try to go for the one with lesser risk (i know this year is not so visible to know from the sch).

Keep a cool mind. As you are within 1km of HW, if you already set for that balloting, apply and dont listen to noises, wait for the result, its the best for your mental health.

2018 was registration year for the Dragon baby boom, which explains the spike in demand that year.


But whatever the demand this year, you are <1km of Hong Wen and have no other choice <1km, so just go for it. U are at least guaranteed a lucky draw ticket mah.

If balloted out, can go for Bendemeer at 2CS, it should be near your house, also good chance.

Go for the school you like better.

Dont take HW just because friends think it is a waste not to join in the ballot. They dont need to take responsibility for the consequences.

Go for HW only if it is your own preference, PLUS you have a happy 2CS school. Most people like HW just because it is a popular school in the area. I have a friend who sent the son to HW (2a1) instead of MS (2a1) because the boy has younger sisters. But regretted because the boy, though in the best HW class, managed only 230, could have got into MS by affiliation if he had been sent to MS.

Just curious.. is affiliation to a certain sec school important? Hmm it just mean you can get into a school with a lower cut off point..but there is also other secondary schools right? Or you might end up no sec schools nearby?

of coz sec school nearby should have some you can get in as per normal cut off, no discount.

Affiliation to a certain sec sch is impt if you like that certain sec school. If you have no preference, then it wont be impt, because like you’ve said, “it just means you get into another sch with a lower COP” or if your kid is the top scorer. As for whether “you might end up with no sec schools nearby”, I guess that depends on where you stay in order to define the “nearby range” and what your score is.

Next year Term 1 January when school open, Principal will brief all 2021 P6 students (born 2009) and parents, bec already arrive into the actual Year 2021, whether still got affliation discount (if any) and by how much ?

Until today,
Principal(s) of many affliated primary schools have kept silent, dare not say nor commit anything, whenever Upper primary school parents approached them, asked, what's the new affliation advantage (if any) going to be, under the new AL ? All waiting for Moe big announcement

Hopefully, covid situation improve by then next year, then parents can sit inside school hall, face to face, listen to Principal's briefing.

if covid situation remain the same as this year, no improvement, probably conduct Parents-meet-Teacher session, online briefing to 2021 P6 parents & pupils

Why ?

Because
the Chinese department is very considerate

As long as P6 affliated students are able to attain minimum A score (75 marks and above), in PSLE Standard Chinese bu-hua, Sec 1 students can study Higher Chinese onwards.

Which Secondary school is so generous and thoughtful, apart from Chung Cheng High, to give you this type of leeway to learn Sec 1 Higher Chinese, if u are unable to obtain MOE Eligibility letter, if failed to fall within Top 30 percent of entire PSLE cohort ?

I am indeed abit being peer pressured of enrolling HW because it’s within 1km & it’s SAP school. I am concerned if my child can survive in SAP coS he’s not a v hardworking person. Does Parents of SAP school need to put in even more efforts to guide children? As I work long hours.
There’s no happy 2CS for me if Hw fails. Bendemeer does not have a “good reputation” so I m not inclined to choose that.
Hence, I was abit gearing towards KC but just couldn’t decide which has a higher probability hit rate: HW or KC?
Franking speaking, is SAP really a good deal? Or if the student is good, he/she can strive in any school too? Or the environment of the school is crucial?

The easy answer first. KCS should have better odds than HWS despite you being in the 1-2km group. Very few within 1km KCS would choose it because most would pick PCPS (a SAP school), if they are within 1km, or CHIJ TP (a school with affiliation) if the child is a girl.

Is SAP a good deal? It’s 见仁见智. OYK / MOE certainly thinks that https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/avoiding-ideological-extremes-has-allowed-singaporean-identity-to-grow-ong-ye-kung now and in future. If you subscribe to the same thinking, then SAP is a BFD.

However, if you are expecting SAP schools to turn all their students into scholar material, you will be in for a disappointment. While most SAP schools produce above average results, it has a lot more to do with their demographics - mostly middle income to higher income families. Not all good students can strive in any school as the environment of the school is crucial. 所谓 近朱者赤，近墨者黑. Demographical reason is probably the main reason why these (and many other) schools are popular in the first place.

I think whether you are in HWS, KCS or any other schools, you will have to spend time to guide your child. Whether you need more hours because he / she is in HWS or otherwise, that’s subjective. School leaders and teachers in popular primary schools are usually cognizant of the demands / expectations of being in a popular school. It doesn’t always mean a more pressurized environment, some schools also have a great support network / system.
