Your child’s mid year report book would have reflected the AL banding, right?

Nope, our sch is sadly not adopting banding even for the recent CA. Hope this SA finally they will do sthg to let us know where we stand

Essentially, as long as your child is competent, he or she will do well in whatever grading system.

Even if your school report card didn't put in the AL band info, with your child's marks, you can work it out yourself which AL band he / she had scored, per subject.

From there, add up his / her Total AL band marks, for 4 subjects

It's similar to what has been practised in O and A levels.

Essentially, as long as your child is competent, he or she will do well in whatever grading system.

I agree the grade bands are similar to O levels grades, Eg A1, A2, B3, B4 etc.

But an important difference is, for O level L1R5 calculations purposes, the students can add up the best scores from their 8 or more subjects. Only certain subjects are compulsory to be used (such as 1 language, 1 humanities, 1 Maths, 1 Science). The rest can play to their best subject strengths.

Whereas for PSLE score, it is compulsory to count all 4 subjects. Even if one subject is particularly weak. Eg Chinese.

I always tell my students that even if they are not all rounders, they need to ensure that they do not do very badly for the weakest subjects.

This holidays will be the turning point though, so worry not!

While it is compulsory to include Mother Tongue in the PSLE score, the marking of it seems to be more lenient at the national level.
The percentage of students getting “A/A* grade for standard Chinese in PSLE was at about 70% as compared to the 40+% for English/Math/Science.
I suppose they do recognise that Chinese is the weakest subject for many students. (It was also my dd’s weakest subject.)

Certain AL band covers quite a wide range of marks though.
Whether a student gets 45 or 64 marks for a standard subject , he gets the same AL 6.
