I also feel the key differentiator is English. To do well in English, you need real love for reading and that too all kind of books. Coming to today’s papers, my son found English super hard.

But if do well in English but didn’t do well in maths will not get selected?

Wonder how many kids are truly good in both. Seems pretty much impossible to be excellent in both

Maths can be trained within a short timing . However language is something we need to groom the kid from young. Having good in both English and maths ( left and right brain) , tats why they r gifted.

For English it is not just about reading lots… it is about being sensitive to the language itself. If you look at the sample qn and ans it requires a very advanced sensitivity to the nuance of Eng language. Something that cannot be trained and has to be innate in the child. Even my kid who devours books does not appreciate this sensitivity and reads just for the plot. For those not gifted, English is just an efficient means to communicate instead of tease out the finer meaning of words. I have seen the way my gep nephews simply delight in acquiring new words and peppering their conversation with them … it is very different from my DD whom I suspect is not Gep gifted standard. I just let her go as far as she will in the test. Just my two cents.

I disagree that the sensitivity to the nuances in English cannot be trained.

If kids start early enough and coached by the right teacher who can teach kids how to learn, then the child will view English words very differently.

But it definitely cannot be trained in a few hours GEP Selection Test camp!! 😂

I just spoke to two old friends who told me all the kids in their kids’ enrichment class found today’s English papers very easy!! They are not attending the typical TLL or MS and definitely not GEP training. We all agree the standard of curriculum in their enrichment centre has always be very high. When my friends signed up, there were also no assessment to accept only gifted kids. They accepted ALL kids. And over the years, the kids improve so much. Value adding for sure!
