You can always discuss with his HCL teacher and/or form teacher on your concerns (dropping HCL earlier).

Hope it helps. All the best!

(A11) Can I offer/don’t offer Higher Chinese (HCL)?

CHS is a SAP school, and we aim to have students learn their mother tongue to the highest level possible for each individual student. Our Integrated Programme (IP) students offer HCL in their first two years (Years 1 and 2), and they typically go on to offer HCL in Years 3 and 4. We encourage all our students to offer HCL as far as they could and if they qualify. On top of improving their cultural intelligence quotient and world readiness skill set, offering HCL will open opportunities and pathways for our students long after they have completed secondary education.

Thanks! My son can go IP or O level track with his T score. He wants to go IP but I have my reservations. O levels will be less stressful and easier to find resources and tuition centers.

Can anyone share reading resources and tuition centres suitable for CHS IP ?

                  Some key points to note:-

If he chooses CHS IP, he will go to Eunoia JC.

If he chooses CHS O Level, he will apply for admission to junior colleges (JC) via JAE with his O Level results. Some students may choose other routes (eg DSA, Poly, …).

IP & O Level curriculum are quite different. You and your son should discuss to see which is more suitable for him.

For most O Level curriculum, especially during Sec 4, teachers & students will be focusing on the O-Level syllabus and exam. Whereas IP students will have a broader curriculum (eg more projects, presentations, … etc).

Hope the following links helps. All the best to your son!

                  https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/parenting-education/ask-sandra-will-my-son-feel-second-class-if-he-takes-the-o-level-track

                  …

Also, involve your son in making the decision and take into consideration what he wants.

                  …

Parents choosing between the IP and O-level track should consider which will be a better fit for their children.

Those on the IP skip the O levels and the programme requires students to be independent learners. So it does not suit those who need a more structured programme and a major examination, like the O levels, to hunker down and study.

The resources given by the school are usually good enough.

Vast majority of IP students make it to their partner JC. As long as your son is close to his classmates and CCA mates, he can always ask around should he need help in any subject (like which tuition centres they attend). Or he can seek his subjects' teachers help for areas of improvement (and reading resources).

Of course, you can also help by asking in forums like this.

                      last edited by

I am trying to clarify some assumptions. I have heard people saying that academically better students tend to opt for IP than O levels, not singling out the actual competence of an individual but as an IP or O levels cohort for a year. Pardon my ignorance, but I am getting the impression that MOE is giving a similar impression. We have a sizable number of students who have taken :

                      (a) O levels and gone with JAE for a JC
                      (b) IP and gone into the same JC
whether they are schools with dual track programs or otherwise. (The same inference can be extended to those who took O levels and IP and went for Poly).
A levels is not everything (without having enough context on what learning is about) but many O levels and IP students inevitably end up in JCs.
While there’s some talk that IP students have ‘advanced learning’ during Yrs 1-4, I have not seen concrete evidence to suggest IP students do better than O level students at A levels (not necessarily the affiliated JC that the IP student came from) all these years, or did I miss something ?
As for independent learning in IP, what exactly do we mean in IP environments by examples ? Independent learning of A level syllabus ? Independent learning for things not related to textbooks ? Independent of anything under the sun that the school does not object ?
                      Any advice is appreciated.
